Question: Cleave + Doublestrike

Rules Questions

hi,

with the release of the APG i remodled my fighter into a Two-Weapon-Fighter. Thanks to the Doublestrike class ability, i get a attack with both my primary and secondary weapon during a standart action

Quote:
At 9th level, a two-weapon warrior may, as a standard action, make one attack with both his primary and secondary weapons. The penalties for attacking with two weapons apply normally.

now, my question is, do i get an attack with both weapons when Cleaving, since in the Feat it says

Quote:
As a standard action, you can make a single attack at your full base attack bonus against a foe within reach. If you hit, you deal damage normally and can make an additional attack (using your full base attack bonus) against a foe that is adjacent to the first and also within reach.

and for a Two-Weapon-Fighter with Doublestrike, a single attack would be with both weapons.

I'm not an expert on this but i think the normal answer is no both are specific standard actions and you only get 1/ round if the text said as part of an attack action then you could.

No, because both Doublestrike and Cleave are specific Standard actions - as such, they cannot be combined.

If Doublestrike or Cleave said 'during any standard action' you could combine them, but the text says specifically 'as a standard action' for both; so either you are using a standard action to make a Doublestrike (and so you have no standard action left to activate Cleave), or you are using a standard action to Cleave (and so you have no standard action left to activate Doublestrike).

It is the same for the Vital Strike action actually - the devs have already said that Vital Strike cannot be combined with Cleave because both of them require a standard action to be activated (Vital Strike requires an 'Attack Action', which is a specific Standard action); this is another example of combo which is not allowed.

Just my 2c.

I would say no.

Normally a single attack is a standard action.

Double strike lets you make 2 attacks as a standard action, which can target one or two creatures.

Cleave allows a single attack as a standard action and another attack if the first hit lands, but you must have a second target.

+1. Both require a standard action to perform; however, if you use Cleave, you get two attacks with your primary hand, which is usually better than an extra attack with your off-hand (but this depends; your off-hand weapon's bonuses might be higher, or you might eventually pick up Two-Weapon Rend, for example).

The Cleave doesn't garentee 2 attacks, where the Double Strike does. The trade off being, of course, that off hand attacks are typically weaker than main hand. And if you have cleave, you are probably using it 2h, so the damage from a single hit could easily equal the duel wield hits, and still have another attack to go. In the end, a matter of preference in style... And maybe some statistical number crunching, if you are mathematically inclined.

Correct, it doesn't; however, you'll strike at +2 (when compared to Double Strike) with your primary hand which makes landing that second blow a bit easier. And Cleave in PF RPG is pretty good for any melee-oriented PC (i.e. two attacks even if you move), whereas in 3E it tended to become a more or less useless feat at higher levels. As I said, for two-weapon stylists picking up Two-Weapon Rend makes Double Strike mechanically the better choice later on (i.e. due to extra rend damage if both attacks hit), but even still Cleave is not a "wasted" feat slot.

I think Cleave isprettygood in PF also, but in 3 campaigns with my group, i have not once seen it used. I must be the only one in the group that likes it, but i have been playing non-front line classes. I do, however think that it is more situational than Double strike.

Against cleave:
Cleave is a standard action, so less useful at higher BABs
Cleave requires a second target, so if enemies are spread out, useless
For cleave:
Below BAB of +5, just plain awesome against groups of enemies
2 potential attacks after moving

Against DS:
Requires high level to use
Duel wield penalty applies
For DS:
Does not require secondary target
More compatibility with a variety of feats
2 definite attacks after moving

Even with all the above taken into consideration, my choice is still likely to be class based
Rogue or ranger- duel wield feat tree
Barbarian, maybe pally or fighter-2hand feat tree
Just my typical play styles though

Cleave was pretty useless in 3x wasn't it. I would say above level 8, just go ahead and erase that, you wont be needing it any more.
