Holy Smite: Difference between EVIL outsider and an outsider who is Evil?

When Holy Smite (and other references) say "evil outsider" does that mean an outsider who ALSO has the Evil descriptor, such as a Bone Devil:

LE Large outsider (devil, EVIL, extraplanar, lawful)

Or does it mean any outsider who's alignment is evil, such as an Efreeti:

LE Large outsider (extraplanar, fire)

Either. Being naughty around a paladin, whether by birth or by choice, is always a bad idea.

I thought that "evil outsider" refrence only meant outsiders with the Evil subtype, the ones that are "made" of evil.

Dark Archive

I would say the they get their extra smite damage against things like the Bone Devil (which has the "evil" descriptor) but standard smite damage against things like the Efreeti (which does not).

It means any creature with the Outsider type that is evil in Alignment.

Any creature the has the Evil Subtype is also evil in alignment but it is not required to have the subtype for the effect.

Also, remember the spell 'Holy Smite' and the Paladin ability of 'Smite Evil' are two different things which work slightly differently.

Smite Evil specifically states that it does more damage against Evil Subtyped Outsiders than against other types of evil aligned things.

Do you have a reference for that?

Yes, I was talking about Holy Smite and not Smite Evil as others mentioned. Thank you for the reference though. Since Smite Evil specifically says "evil subtyped outsiders" and Holy Smite says "evil outsiders" I'm inclined to rule it as you say but I'm still curious if there's a reference somewhere that clarifies it.

I've the same inquiry here with the terminology of "evil outsider" in the cases of the Advanced Race Guide Alternative Aasimar Racial Traits "Exalted Resistance" on page 85, and "Celestial Crusader" on page 84.

Do the traits trigger against any evil-aligned outsiders or do they have to be outsiders with the subtype [evil]?

The issue should be clarified in a FAQ. In the meantime, I'll rule it to be valid against any evil outsider (not only subtyped ones).

It talks about dealing extra damage to an evil outsider. It doesn't say anything about Outsiders with the Evil subtype or anything like that--it's not even "Evil" with a capital "e." The conditions are very simple and spelled out. Is the creature an outsider? Is the creature evil? Done.

if they meant the subtype, they'd capitalize it. Since they didn't, default to the meaning of evil as referring to alignment, not subtype.

I agree with this.
