Ian McShane (Lovejoy for UK readers, Al Swearengen for US ones) is Blackbeard. And his ship has forward-firing dual flamethrowers. And Penelope Cruz is in it. And Rush has a bigger role. And they've dropped the dead wood of Bloom-Knightley. And it's based on a Powers novel.
So, pretty much sold.
Bad news: PotC 5 and 6 are already being planned and apparently will be one massive mega-movie split in half. I don't think that helped 2 and 3, and I definitely hope that 4 stands alone and doesn't have any unnecessary scene-setting stuff for future movies. 2 and 3 were massively successful, but critically mauled because they were too long and too convoluted. Hopefully 4 can get back to the streamlined, straightforward fun of the original movie.

I would have prefered it if they dropped Barbosa(Rush) also.

Saw the midnight showing at a Regal theater as it was the only place showing it in 2D, $11.25 per ticket even so.
(I'm not a fan of paying an extra $3.00+ to watch my movies while wearing glorified sunglasses (in the dark), with the thought that CGI effects(which are inherently 3D when created) will be 3D and "POP" off the screen. Pffft.)
More of the same humor and tons of action throughout the movie as in the previous trilogy.
A bit of a bummer that they removed Pintel & Ragetti (the 2 pirate stooges) as I enjoyed their 'routine' in the previous movies. The two British soldier stooges also do not make an appearance. Most of the laughs are provided through interaction with Jack Sparrow.
The mermaids were neat, but had a minor flaw on execution IMO, but honestly just an extreme nit-pick being a long time gamer and monster enthusiast.
Barbosa is in the movie to drive a major plot point, I enjoy Geoffrey Rush as an actor, but this was one of his weaker performances IMO. I think they're trying too hard to make him the ultimate stereo-typical pirate badass. Prediction: Pirates 5 he'll have a hook hand, lol.
Overall I enjoyed it as much as the previous trilogy, the 2nd movie (Dead Man's Chest) still being my favorite. There were a ton of interesting scenes and effects, but I'll leave those unmentioned. All said, I think fans of any(or all) of the other three movies will enjoy this.

Seriously, it does look pretty good, but how much longer are they going to milk this franchise?
Or until they can't meet Depp's price. I don't think this franchise would float without him. (Pun intended.)

I love these movies. The plots are no cheesier than the Pathfinder/D&D games I have run/played, and I love those. And the character interactions in PotC are really interesting because there's the constant threat of a backstabbing, but so many people are working together for different reasons.
I was elated to hear that there will be a 5th and a 6th movie.

Same here. Just got back from the movie with my oldest child. We both loved it.
The mermaids were much cooler than I anticipated as were the new characters. Penelope Cruz in pirate garb sure didn't hurt the eyes either.
These movies also provide great Pathfinder inspiration for me as well, especially when designing adventures for my kids. Action packed, plenty of humor, and sprinkled with creepy suspense.
Favorite movie of the year so far. (Although I expect strong competition from Green Lantern and Captain America.)
Also, much like Toy Story 3, Disney knows how to do a movie in 3D. This was one of the few movies where 3D didn't come across as an afterthought or quick cash-in attempt.

Watched it over the weekend. It was very good, but It places probably 4/4 for me as far as PotC movies go.
Issues:
I felt they dedicated too much time to the
I also felt the intro to the movie to get moving in the plot took too long. The first movie had a long intro, but it was the first one. We dont need a big intro to give us info on who Gibbs, Jack, and Barbosa are, we know them already. Get the story moving.
I felt the stuff that happened in between movies 3 and 4 wasnt done very well. Large piece of plot material that is barely covered.
I felt like Blackbeard was kinda lackluster in comparion to undead Barbosa and Fish-faced Davey Jones. Sure there is the
Wondering what movie 5 and 6 will be about? Spoilerfied guesses?

I saw the movie on Friday and thought it was fun. It went back to what made the first movie fresh and fun. I do miss the comic relief of the other minor characters and mildly disapprove of how they were written off. One thing that disappoints me is that in all the previous movies they explain things. Why are there skeleton/zombie pirates running around? Explanation: Because of a cursed Aztec Treasure. Where'd this tentacle man come from? Explanation: It's Davey Jones and he's supposed to ferry the dead to the afterlife but he's corrupted his position and thus become corrupted himself. Yes, it lays it out for you but the new movie doesn't explain anything involved with Blackbeard. Like

Saw it Saturday with the Spouse and Spawn and was bored to tears.
For me Jack Sparrow doesnt work as a primary protagonist. A huge part of what made him work for me was his unpredicablity of which he possessed none of during the course of this film.
Couple that with set pieces that were shot with all the excitement of a bowel movement and you have a pretty boring film. For me it was the least of the POTC movies. They need to get Gore Verbinski back and get rid of Rob Marshall.

I went to see this yesterday with the wife and my older kids, and we all thought it was very good. It didn't have quite that unexpectedly playful and delightful feeling that the first movie had, but that may be only because the first movie was SO unexpectedly good. Overall, though, I thought it was excellent.
I missed the presence of our two pairs of comic relief bit characters (pirate and sailor), but other than that I had no real complaints. Just overall excellent, delivering exactly what was promised (though perhaps fewer zombies than the trailers would suggest).

I think part of this may be because all of his unpredictability was used up in the previous 3 movies. We all know that Sparrow is ridiculously intelligent and aware of people's motives, intentions, and methods. Sometimes luck has a hand in it, which makes him a bit of an improvisational opportunist. But he's good at it, and I like it.
One complaint I might have is that he seemed to have developed a substantial amount of moral fiber. More so than he had before, anyway. Sure, he's still pirating and such, but he was definitely more... concerned(?)... about people.
Also, Jack's funny and stuff. Cheers mate.

+1, likewise, my only complaints were really just nit picks, nothing that would stop me from recommending the movie.
Also I was under the impression that each of the new Pirates movies were going to be standalone entries not another trilogy. HERE
I had heard that as well, the movie seemed to leave plenty of room for a sequel.

Just saw this a couple of hours ago. Good movie. It's a shame Pintel and Ragetti or Murtogg and Mullroy did not return, although I suspect

I agree that they did not emphasis the ah-ha moments as heavily as in the three previous movies, and it was a bit harder to follow.
Here are a few tidbits that I was able to parse out.
Blackbeard's sword does control his ship.
Blackbeard practices voodo.
Overall, it was a fun movie. The pacing was better than II and III. There were some wacky moments, but the level of over-the-top moments was down from some of the craziness from III, e.g., the mill wheel sequence.

I just saw this. It was so very... not good.
As with the later PotC movies, the plot (and storytelling) was overcomplicated and relatively unintelligible. It was just a jerky ride from one set piece to the next. What was Cruz's character's motivation? What was up with that whole 'Blackbeard redemption' nonsense? Blackbeard himself was inconsistent and dumb: "Mermaid, if you don't walk I'll kill you." 5 minutes later: "If anything happens to the mermaid all is lost." Yeah, sparky, we kind of figured that out a while back. Bozo.
I suppose it was better than the truly terrible 3rd one, but not by much.
