Template Conversion in HD

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Hi folks,

i've a conversion problem(3.5 -> PF), maybe you guys can help me with?

We are playing a pathfinder campaign at the moment, and because i always wanted to try a Master of many forms (a D&D-PrC), i did ;)

I've reached a consensus with my DM, that i can play the MOMF with the old D&D Wild Shape rules.

Problem is: I'm reluctant to use D&D critters for forms, so i try sticking with PF-creatures.
Unfortunately the Bestiary is not a very exhaustive supply for forms, especially in the lower HD-ranges.

So, despite the fact that the use of template is normaly forbidden, i thought about "translating" some of the non-subtype style templates like "advanced" or "giant" to a HD-progression, so that i have at least one or two forms at my disposal, which can be increased in power over the next 2 levels.

For example: At the moment i can only shape into animals and humanoids of small or medium size. The Deinonychus, a medium sized dinosaur, is one of the very few forms in the Bestiary i can shape into. But the next best animals are large, so i have to wait at least 2 levels to shape into something better(We are using the slow XP-progression).

So how would the "advanced" template increase the neccessary HD of the form, to approximate the equivalent increase in power?

Thanks in advance!

Brakiri

I recently started a game with the pathfinder druid and having never played them before I really did not know the big difference. After much reading and debate with my DM we came up with a MoMF prestidge that would take into account the PF rules. They are as follows, hope you like it,.....

Requirements:
Feats: Alertness, Endurance
Skills: Any one knowledge skill, 5 ranks
Special: Wild Shape Class Feature

BA: As Druid
Good Saves: Fort and Ref
HD: d8
Skills ranks: 4+int per level
Class skills: Acrobatics, Climb, Craft, Diplomacy, Disguise, Fly, Handle Animal, Knowledge (Nature), Perception, Spellcraft, Stealth, Swim, and Survival

Level - Ability
1 Shifter's Speech, Wild Shape (Alter Self), Natural Shifter
2 WS (Beast Shape II)
3 WS (Elemental Body I), Fast Wild Shape
4 Adept Master of Forms, WS (Plant Shape I)
5 WS (Beast Shape III), WS (Elemental Body II)
6 WS (Form of Dragon I), WS (Beast Shape IV)
7 True Master of Forms, WS (Giant Form I), WS (Elemental Body III)
8 WS (Form of Dragon II), WS (Plant Shape II)
9 WS (Giant Form II), WS (Elemental Body IV), Thousand Faces
10 Evershifting form, WS (Form of Dragon III)

Shifter's Speech, Fast Wild Shape and Evershifting Form are exactly the same as the 3.5 MoMF. Thousand Faces is as the Druid ability.

Natural Shifter: A Master of Many Forms gains one additional use of Wild Shape at each new level in this class.

Master of Forms is a new ability to replicate some of the 'lost' shapes.
Adept Master of Forms: At second level the Master of Many Forms can use Beast Shape to assume the form of either an animal or vermin. Additionally he may use his ability to shift into an elemental to assume the form of an ooze. This does not change the list of abilities.

True Master of Forms: At 7th level the Master of Many Forms may also use the ability to shift into magical beasts to shift into Monstrous Humanoids or Fey. Alternatively, he may use Giant Form to assume the form of an abberation, again keeping the same restrictions on abilities in both instances.

Evershifting Form: The Master of Many Forms may now use Wild Shape at will. This is in addition to the abilities as outlined in the 3.5 version.

Hi Orinium,

that sounds really nice.
Problem is, that they really cut back the combat prowess AND reduced the utility usability of the wild shape ability.

That's the reason i stayed with the D&D rules. If you shape into a giant eagle to transport your party, and your original strength score is not even high enough, to support the forms body, this will not work. With a 20 point point buy, high str, dex AND con-scores are not possible, so, most of the time your copy of the form will never be anywhere near its potential.
Most importantly, the char is already at level 5, with appropriate stats for the D&D- wild shape rules. I doubt my DM would allow a complete reconstruction of the char.

To make things short, while i like your conversion, i would rather like to discuss feasable "template into HD-conversion" methods instead :)
