So we are going to play a low magic urban campaign soon. I asked the DM if I could used Spiritual Guide in place of a familiar for my ranger from Complete Champion. What ever it said, just reverse when it says, you can only use this in the wilderness and not in civilization, to you can only use this in civilization and not in wilderness.
What is confusing me is, do I actually get a ghost friend or not? "Although it cannot protect you from harm, your spiritual
guide can warn you of impending danger. As long as your
spiritual guide is with you, you gain a divine bonus equal
to one-quarter your ranger level."
So can it see through doors for me, or is it just giving me bonuses to skills? If its just giving me bonuses I think I might rather have an attack dog with me in the big city. "Since I don't get any ranger spells :( ."
So do I have an Obi-wan? Do I get a Spirit Advisor?

the spirit guide is actually rage prophet now, in the APG.
basically it sounds like the same ability.using it only in the urban environment sounds cool
we had an urban ranger a few APS ago in cheliax, that worked out really well. She had a dog tho.
But I could see an dead relative or mentor who, for whatever reason is attached to cities or urban environments. sounds awesome.
next, no it cant see through doors.
Yes its obi-wan but even obi wan didnt see through doors for luke, he gave him advice (which adds bonuses to your rolls)
Look up the spirit Guide in APG under rage prophet if you cant get access to it, it sounds a bit better than the one you want to use.
We have a rage prophet in the AP we are in, and its really, REALLY cool.

Ah, I see it. Do you think that would be better than an actual animal companion? RP wise, I would say yes.
well first and foremost, Id say RP takes precidence.
Our urban ranger in council of theives had a dog (we captured it from enemies, and the ranger eventually took it as a companion)
the dog was cool an useful for a few levels, then it just became a target for area of effect, kept dying.
If the ranger was a druid and had more levels into animal than maybe it would have survived better, we would forget about it alot too.
I would say if you plan on taking a few rogue levels, then get an animal, because it will help you flank.
if you are gonna stay pure ranger go with the spirit, and looking into Rage prophet version, and see if DM will let you use that one.
I think for less than 10 bucks you can get the APG in PDF form.
