so my question is at first level the ranger can only use this ability once per day, does that mean that if i am fighting a group of enemies could i change my focus from one enemy to another as long as my enemies are still alive when i change my focus. meaning that i could have my focus on one enemy and when he is down to a few HP left i switch to a new enemy and so on using my focus on all enemies still using the ability only once per day?
any thoughts at all about this, do i understand this right?
Just reading it, that's the way I would understand it. It looks like it's pratically good for an entire battle.
The "trick" would be to determine how close an enemy is to death and then switch.
There should be some others come on here an give you a more definitive answer. I'm actually a little surprised you haven't had more responses.

You can use it X times per day depending on your level.
If you switch enemies("until the Ranger designates a new focus") it ends. It is kind of like the paladin smite in that regard.PS: I just realized you asked about first level. You can do it once per day at first. If the enemy dies or you try to change the focus that is it.
It is balanced against having a favored enemy because the favored enemy never needs activation.
The focus is very limited, it requires an action to activate, and it works against anything.
