Touch Spells?

Round 1: Magus

One of the core advantages of the Magus class is the Spellstrike ability, and while it seems pretty awesome, looking over their spell list reveals a relative paucity of spells with a touch range. Is this just a problem with the early spell list?

Don't get me wrong, I like the flavor of the spells they have, but right now it seems that this neat class feature is going to be a little wasted due to a lack of available spells to use with it.

I suspect that it's something that will be addressed in Ultimate Magic. Pathfinder and to a degree even 3.5 with all its splats does not have that many good touch spells.

Until Ultimate Magic comes out, I'd probably focus on Magic Missile, Scorching Ray, and buffs. There's just not that much else available.

Just as an aside, Shocking Grasp is just so damn horrible that it makes me angry. Levels 5-9 is the only time it out damages Magic Missile and Magic Missile has the benefits of no attack roll, hitting even invisible foes, and being a force effect. Shocking Grasp should have a higher damage cap.

Or last for more attacks.

Rest of your comment is completly true, but that one is false. Magic missile can't hit anything that has total concealment and invisibility gives total concealment even when character can pinpint it.

Also shocking graps is modest option to use with that spell storing weapon found in random treasure.
Higher damage cap for shocking grasp would be sensible, taking into account that damage caps were designed with ranged spells in mind. Or damage die could be increased to 1d8.

Huh, you are right. I don't know where I picked up that entirely false idea. It wasn't even true in 3.5 but I swear its my GM that's said that before. Maybe 3.0?

Yeah, I think d8's would make it a bit more competitive but if its still capped at 5 then you're only adding 5 more damage on average. Raising the cap means you're adding 14 damage at level 9 when Magic Missile hits its peak. I think that's a fair increase over Magic Missile given the requirement of an attack roll and having to be next to your opponent.

I play a 8th level Magus in the current campaign, and yes, there are not too much touch spells on the Magus spell list, that's for sure.

You can help Shocking Grasp with Intensify Spell though.

Could you tell me what Intensify Spell does? I tried googling it and all I found is the old Epic metamagic feat, and I'm sure that's not what you were referring to lol.

Sorry, it is Intensified Spell, and it lets you increase the damage cap of a spell that inflicts damage defined by dice/level. It has no prerequisites. For more info, check the APH on page 163.

+1 spell level for +5 increase to caster level based damage dice caps by five... that's actually pretty nice for some low level spells.

One slight problem I have with it though, it says it increases the damage dice by 'five levels'

I don't know if that means 'five effective caster level cap boost' or if it means 'five more dice'

Some spells scale more slowly than one dice per level, and I would hope those spells get the same benefit (requiring the additional caster levels that slow progression mandates of course.)
