Ancestral Arms & Exotic Weapon Proficiency

This may need to go in the General Rules Section but I specifically want to know for Society so I'm asking here.

The Ancestral Arms alternative racial trait from the Advanced Players Guide allows Half-Elves to gain a martial or exotic weapon proficiency. Does this trait allow a character to bypass the BaB +1 requirement on Exotic Weapon Proficiency?

Dark Archive

I would say yes as it is a bonus feat that replaces Skill Focus.

This is really a rules question, not a PFS question.

I asked the same thing a while back and Jason Nelson (who worked on the book) said he thought you wouldn't need to meet the prerequisite.

Deathboy -- humans get a bonus feat as a racial ability as well, but that doesn't mean that they can ignore prerequisites.

Yes, for three reasons:

  • You choose traits when you create a character, so if it required +1 BAB, only a half-elf fighter or a character created at higher than first level could take it,
  • The half-elf is not taking (and doesn't receive) the Exotic Weapon Proficiency feat, so he doesn't have to meet the feat's prerequisite,
  • Compare monks and rogues, who get proficiency with various exotic weapons at +0 BAB. Clearly proficiency with an exotic weapon, in itself, doesn't require a minimum BAB.

Er....what?

My mistake, didn't read the original text.

I'm disappointed to see this. Especially since it's for elves. A trait should not be equal to a feat and there was no need to write it that way.

I agree it would have been much more clear if they just said something like "half-elves get proficiency with one weapon, etc.".

Don't think of it like the two little traits you take when you make your character. It's actually a racial feature that is being replaced. This one actually replaces a bonus feat that half elves get - Skill Focus - at first level. So you are just replacing one feat with another.

While this has been (apparently) answered by Jason, even if not the character would receive the feat. While his BAB is +0 he wouldn't be able to use the feat, but he would have the feat. Jason's change would have been to allow you to ignore the pre-reqs.

In other words, if you have the feat that doesn't mean you can use the feat.
