Ranged attack vs held torch?

Rules Questions

I'm not sure how to deal with this. The player wants to shoot an arrow at a mounted enemies' held torch so that it goes out.

Sure, why not? I'd make it a standard action and grant the enemy a reflex save with a DC equal to 10 + the archer's BAB.

Ranged sunder attempt or disarm -- not likely to work honestly.

Sadly, ranged sunders and disarms were something I liked in 2nd Ed, yet dont appear to have made the cut to PF.

I don't see how adding more wood to a torch is supposed to stop it from burning.

If he had a frost bow or something like that I could maybe see this happening... otherwise... not so much.

Have the player make an attack on the torch using its own AC.

It is a diminutive object (+3 ac) with a natural AC equal to the objects hardness (+5) and should use the wielders dex modifier (Lets say +2) then I would give it soft cover as well. So in my game I would call it an AC of 24 against the torch. It would be 28 without precise shot.

So yeah, difficult but not impossible.

I don't know about diminutive size (I thought Tiny) or soft cover. The rider will naturally hold it in an exposed position to shed as much light as possible. Otherwise, this seems right.

The torch has Hardness 5 and probably less hit points than a one-handed weapon (being more flimsy) so say 2hp. It takes half damage from ranged weapons before applying hardness. It becomes broken at 1 hp (probably not significantly changing its effects) and is destroyed at 0 hp.

First, find out if the PC can do 14 hp damage to the torch with his weapon, otherwise it's not worth rolling.

Ranged sunders and disarms are only available to the archer archetype for fighters.

I think they should have been feats. Or even better, a feat that allows you to use any improved combat manuver feat you have as a ranged attack.

So a piece of wood thats on fire has a better ac than a man in full plate with a shield?

also

And said torch can take almost twice the damage of a normal person?

I introduce the final Boss for the newest upcoming Adventure Path.....Drum Roll....The Torch!!

Well, yeah, it would be far easier to shoot the rider, but the question was asked.

Liberty's Edge

I'd be fine with a ranged disarm. Maybe at penalty, because it's ranged.

Well, he doesn't need to actually break the torch. He just needs to

1). Hit it. Presumably this could cause the guard to drop it. Ranged touch attack with the arrow (if successful) causing a Reflex check perhaps? This could backfire, causing the guard to set himself on fire, though.

or

2). Send the arrow just over the torch, causing the passing wind to snuff it.

or

3). Just shoot the guard and his buddies.
