Rise of the Runelords pbp

Gamer Connection

Just a word of warning: I'm an inexperienced DM, so caveat emptor.

Details:
Rise of the Runelords AP
20 point buy
Pathfinder Core and APG allowed
Average starting gold
5-6 players

I want players who can post at least once a weekday, but preferably can check in multiple times during US business hours. (I know there will be times when someone's just too busy to do much - sometimes it'll be me - but I don't want the game to stall daily while we wait for one last player to check in each night.)

So if you submit a character for this game:
Let me know that you're available during US business hours
Tell me what experience you have with this AP already
Offer a brief character concept, including party role (eg, tank, arcane blaster, arcane utility, face/secondary healing, etc - as specific as you'd like) and why you'd be in Sandpoint at the beginning of the adventure (being a resident is fine)

I'll accept submissions through Thursday. Will post party Friday.

Thanks for your interest,
Jamie

Dark Archive

I've Never Played this Ap before, but I did Read the Players Guide.

I'll submit this Character...
Thinking
Human Ranger(Urban), Ranged.

or

Human Rogue(Scout)

Knew I was forgetting something. Thanks. Yes, two traits.

I've been wanting to play a RotR game for quite a while. I've not played in the AP at all. I frequently check the paizo site between work hours on the east coast (9-5 EST) so I can easily post more than once a day.

Character Concept:

Dwarven Fighter (Two-Handed Weapon archetype from the APG): Tank-like

Born in Janderhoff, Feldspar is the son of a formerly wealthy merchant who came into hard times a few decades ago and lost virtually everything. Uninterested in the give and take of trade, Feldspar trained as a warrior and has begun his career as a merchant guard, traveling throughout Varisia.

He's developed a pattern of working a while until his purse is relatively full and then spending some time in a local town pub spending it all before hiring out again. He was just doing the same thing in Sandpoint when he had something of a revelation: He was tired of such a shiftless life, always working for someone else, never staying anywhere longer than his coin can last, making many acquaintances but few friends. (A lot of this is the result of talking to Ameiko Kaijitsu at the inn)

Deciding that he likes Sandpoint and the people there, Feldspar has begun to think about turning over a new leaf, only just deciding that maybe this time he'll find work that will benefit the town rather than some arrogant bastard of a merchant.

(Brief note: Feldspar is based on a PC I played briefly for a one-shot PbP campaign here on Paizo. It only lasted a couple of weeks, but I've been thinking I'd like to play him again.)

Thanks for considering me!

I've never played in any of the APs, though I running 3 of them (2 Legacy of Fire and 1 Serpent's Skull). I would love to actually be able to play an AP. I don't own RotR so I haven't looked at the module. And I'm a very patient person and have made my own series of mistakes as a GM, so no worries here.

I know how hard it is to get Clerics into groups and it has been a long time since I've played a Cleric, so I'll go with it. (Either that or I was thinking a Sorcerer)

Rough Character Concept:
My father was a poor fisherman in Sandpoint. My family has been living here before Sandpoint was founded. As a boy, I helped my father on his fishing trips. When I was still a young man, our fishing vessel was attacked by a viscous sea serpent that knocked my father overboard. My father, and the sea serpent, were never seen again. Distraught by the loss of my father and not understanding why Gozreh, the God my father taught me to worship, would let such a thing happen, I sought out those who could give me spiritual guidance. Through this guidance, I came to better understand what had happened. For the remainder of my adolescence, I continued on with my father's fishing business while learning the ways of Gozreh. Today I am a young man who believes that I was directed down this spiritual path for a reason, only if I knew what that reason was.

EDIT: I generally check multiple times a day, but at least once a day. If I can't do once a day, I'll generally know in advance (e.g. traveling with limited internet access) and can give a heads up.

Dark Archive

Never played RotR.

I'm thinking Half-Elf Paladin of Abadar. Bringing law and justice to those who prey on the weak in Varisia.

Will have backstory and other things fleshed out over the next day.

Hmmm, I think I could pull it of timewise, I'm maybe 6 hours ahead in time, so it should work.

Beyond having the RotR players book I don't know much about it, except that it probably involves runelords...?
I'd be interested in playing a Wizard, Specializing in divination most likely, removing Necromancy and Illusion schools. Probably going Loremaster.

Likely a minor scholar who have come to Sandpoint only to stay overnight while traveling to Magnimar from Riddleport in search of a sponsor. I was thinking he would like to join the Cyphermages in Riddleport but lacks enough knowledge and funds for that, and since Varasia is full of relics he might be looking for a sponsor willing to fund an expedition looking for such lore. Haha, a bit like a countryboy trying to make it big in Hollywood.

1/2 Orc Barbarian planning on Rage Prophet.

Kithian Darlok
Born to a local Shoanti tribe, Kithian was exiled from the tribe after his coming of age vision quest lead to a confrontation between himself and the tribe shaman. He has come to Sandpoint to visit the big city.

Wanted to submit this character for the game. She is from a dead before started Serpent's Skull game. I have scanned RotRL book one because I was considering running it, other than that I know nothing. I am at a computer all day for work and can get online at least a couple times a day.

Background:

Spoiler:
In Vigil, Aeres grew up with the constant reminder that evil is a persistent threat. Her mother Genevieve was a cleric in many crusades against the Hold of Belkzen. On one of the missions, they rescued a band of mercenaries from an Orc ambush with which many had perished. Among their ranks was a fighter of Chelaxian blood named Serion. After many days of medical care and long conversation, Genevieve and Serion fell in love and were quickly married and with child. Soon after Aeres fourth birthday both her parents returned to the ranks of the crusaders. A few years had passed and Aeres had become quite the swordswoman and took many of the duties around the church as her own. As she slept one night as her parents were away Father Amos came to her and broke her the devastating news. Her parents were slain in a surprise attack on their camp and only a few had survived. From that day on Aeres was determined to become one of the strongest of the holy order of knights and to make her name she volunteered to journey to Varisia hoping to bring law, order and the blessing of Iomedae.

Hey Jamie Noone:

Apologies, but I'm going to remove my submission (Dwarven Fighter) from consideration. I just found out one of my current pbp DMs has also opened up submissions for a RotR pbp. Since I'm already one of his players and am familiar with his style, I'm trying for spot in that campaign. I'm not sure if I'll get it or not, but I'd hate to deprieve someone else from a chance at a slot in this game by playing both fields.

Thanks and good luck with your game!

Scratch the Urban ranger Character, I've Decided i'd like to try a bard

Camilo Duin
Male Varisian Human Court Bard (maybe some rogue)

Camilo was the Jester to Lonjiku Kaijitsu, Untill he got too "Friendly" with Lonjiku's daughter. Siting that Camilo was bringing out Ameiko's "wild Side", Lonjiku had Camilo Run out of town on threats of Death. Camilo, feeling he was to young (and good looking) to die, fled to Riddleport (a wretched hive of Sum and Villiany, If Camilo every saw one), To gather his thoughts and figure out how to return and See Ameiko again.

Recently aquiring some new "friends" and "skills" Camilo has Decided to return to Sandpoint to attemp to Re-kindle his old Flame.

You're active enough in our Council of Thieves campaign (I play Del) that I think you're timing is good.

The one concern I have about the concept is that there will be times in the first adventure, at least, that he'll have time and opportunity to move on, so he'd need a reason to stick around Sandpoint.

Well, according to the Players guide, there is a landmark in Sandpoint called "Old Light" that is suposed to be some kind of ancient ruin, maybe he will be there to spend some time examining it, looking for clues as to it's origin and purpose?

Also, I don't supose you have acces to Seekers of Secrets? The class of Pathfinder Savant is very interesting, but if that's a no no then Loremaster is just as good.

The Old Light would be a good motive, and I found the Pathfinder Savant on the srd - I'll approve it.

I did some work on my character last night (stats and background) and I've created an alias for him, but I haven't populated the profile with the details yet. I hope to get that done tonight. Look for more details soon.

Rullis Stillman
Male Human (Chelaxian) Cleric 1 of Gozreh

It looks like a full party has shown interest here.

I can post multiple times a day if needed.

Kithian will start as Barbarian 1, then take 1 level in Oracle, then adjust levels as needed to meet requirements of Rage Prophet.

I have not played this AP before but am really wanting to.

I can change my reason for being in Sandpoint to tie into my vision quest which set me on the path of Rage Prophet.

Alrighty so I have a background fleshed out for Kerrec Valerian (AKA Kerrec the Grim), half-elf, half Varisian Paladin of Abadar. I should be able to post multiple times per day. I have no familiarity with the AP other than the guide which I downloaded yesterday.

Background:
Hailing from Nybor, Kerrec was born of an elven mother and Varisian father. His father, Sung Valerian, is a farmer who had a brief tryst with a nomadic elven woman. It ended badly with his father's heart broken. Months later she returned with a baby son, a son she refused to raise, and so Sung was burdened with the constant reminder of the love he had lost in the face of his son.

To say he was unkind to Kerrec would be accurate. Cruel references to his half-breed heritage and crueler punishments for the slightests mistakes were daily occurrences for Kerrec. The only fortune of his upbringing was Nybor, a place where helf-breeds were tolerated, quite different from much Varisia.

One night Kerrec, at this point a hardened teenager both physically and emotionally, was recovering in his bed from a particularly nasty beating at the hands of his father. Crying himself to sleep wondering if there was truly any fairness or justice in the world, he had a dream of a door to a large vault with a golden symbol of a key carved into it. It's brilliance overhwlemed him. He recognized the symbol as that of Abadar. A voice said to him "One day all will be revealed". Kerrec woke from the dream with a start. He had hope for the first time.

Not long after that he left the farm, never to see it again. He traveled to Kaer Maga and the Bank of Abadar. His journey was dangerous and for the first time he saw the prejudices against half-elves first hand. He gained entry into the clergy at the temple and soon found he was suited for the life of a justicar. He saw he was now able to defend those who could not defend themselves, enforce the law and order and tend the needy. Paladinhood was his calling and after 5 years of training he was sent off on the roads of Varisia to aid in the settlement disputes, enforce the laws of the land and execute those who commit the highest of crimes.

Over the past year he has gotten the nickname Kerrec the Grim for his stern demeanor while solving arguments and enforcing justice. He has recently come to Sandpoint after adjudicating a land dispute between two farmers, his background serving him well for the task. He is inquiring about any service as a Servant of Abadar he may provide to the populace.

PS Rullis and Kerrec could have an interesting working relationship. ;-)

That's a great hook, but it will require some reworking to fit the histories of those NPCs, as I understand them.

1) I don't think Lonjiku is indulgent enough to have kept a jester on his personal staff. However, he might have employed a bard (who just happened to have "court bard" training) as a music teacher for Ameiko.

2) I'm deciding Ameiko must be about 27 by now, so keep that in mind when choosing Camilo's age.

3) The relationship with Ameiko would've ended 6 or so years ago. So it'll be a challenge to explain how Camilo has been out in the world for 6 years, but is still just level 1.

Were you planning on taking a level of rogue at level 2 for the class skills and trapfinding?

Dark Archive

perhaps not a jester, but a bard none the less. I went with jester, because Court bard seems to debuff people with his performance, like hes insulting them, A music Teacher would prob work too.

Yes, I''ll Prob Alt back and forth with bard/ rogue for a few lvls, then keep going with Bard.

I'll read up on Riddleport and come up with a good reasion i haven't increased in lvl (perhaps I was learning Roguey stuff, rather than practicing my bard skills).

**edit**

After Ariving in Riddle port, I went to Visit Overlord Gaston Cromarcky, to Seek work. While in his Employement, I studyed(secertly) the Pirates/ mercnarys that he delt with, learning as much as i could about how they delt with others/ Tactics etc. Practicing when i found time (hence it taking 6 years). After a few years (6 or so) Gaston got bored with me, and sent me off. Not having anywhere else to go, I decided to head back to Sandpoint to see Ameiko.

I am going to withdraw from this. Good luck to all of you!

Looks like there is a party of five here:

- Human Cleric
- Human Bard/Rogue
- Half-Orc Barbarian
- Half-Elf Paladin
- ?? Wizard

Seems balanced.

You appear to have your party, but I would be interested if you want a sixth. (Understanding that this is late in the submission window, so if you don't need me, my feelings won't be hurt.)

I can definitely post daily, but during the workday is iffy depending on the load at work. I have no issues with my character being bot'd by another player or the DM for the purpose of moving the story forward.

I am familiar with the AP, but have never gotten a chance to play it, much as I have tried to get our table to take it on. I'm pretty good at keeping player knowledge and character knowledge separate, so I don't feel that should be an issue.

As for character concept, I'm thinking of a ranged attacker - either a fighter with the archer archetype from the APG (haven't studied it close enough to be sure yet), or a ranger going with the Archery combat style.

Purpose for being in Sandpoint is straightforward. He's a local and has grown to become a professional hunter/guide for visitors to the area. He does a fair job of getting his clients into position for a good hunt and always brings them back safely, so he's managed to get some references from the local innkeepers when someone comes in off the road and wants "someone who knows the woods and can help me bag a deer." It keeps him in enough coin to avoid getting a real job, at least so far.

EDIT: The character would most likely be an Elf, might be male or female. And - I'm always open to suggestions from fellow players because I like to see how other folks' minds work when presented with a character build, so if you have an idea, please pass it on. I might use it, modify it, ignore it, but I will definitely consider it.

Yeah, we can go with this party:

Rullis Stillman, cleric
Camilo Duin, bard/rogue
Kerric Valerian, paladin
BoggBear's wizard
Kithian Darlok, barbarian

The discussion thread is created. Please check in to let me know you're still with us.

Ainvar, thanks for your interest. I'd really like to run this with players who have as little exposure to the AP as possible, though.

Have you thought about running it yourself? Part of the reason I'm running it is because I feel I know too much to play in it.

I have. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to commit to running a game. I can post reactions on the part of my characters with a lot less time commitment than I can make posts to drive the story forward.

I'll probably lurk in your game just to see how it goes. I'd be happy to join in later if you need a replacement character or whatever.
