A call to DM's... Help with building Magic Items

Advice

Dark Archive

HELP, my imagination is taxed... i need items. OK... i have been DM'ing the same group for 5 years and it has recently grown from 4 to 7-9 about 2 times a week. I have tons of source material for games but that being said... I am running low on ideas for new magical items and I know
you guys of the boards will have tons for me.
I am looking for 3rd party / home brew magical item ideas to give out to my wonderful group.

Rules:
- Does not need to meet an specific build requirements ( i like items with powers that do not meet the +'s category)
- any power level ( we play commoner to level 40's)
- any alignment
- Home brew (you made it up... GREAT!)
- 3rd party sources

Leave me all the specifics (such as scaling powers if they level and so on...)

Thanks in advance.

One solution that it does not seem you have used is in the CRB (Core Rule Book): intelligent items. They are highly customizable to suit desired power levels and should be easy enough in design to have their abilities fit any desired theme.

Examples:

1.) A sword of subtlety with a personality based on The Godfather. Talks to its wielder semi-mush mouthed, has one or more abilities pertaining to sneaking around, and taking people's stuff. Talks smack to its wielder when it is of the opinion that said wielder is being stupid. It often attempts control to get a scabbard worthy of itself.

2.) A robe of eyes modeled after the HAL computer from the Stanley Kubrick movie. An especially appropriate ability for it would be telekinesis. The eyes on the robe would be circular and red. If you play it more up for laughs, the robe would always call its wearer Dave...

Have fun!

I like the ideas thanks... I have used intelligent items in the past.. Bif the Sword of Power (char - 20) (but int - 5). My problem with Int items now is with 9 players i do not have the time to run an NPC items to its max effect ( i tend to forget they have the item). DM 9 PC's is way diff from a group of 4... lol

I like the Godfather idea though... thanks

It's an old one, but still a classic.

+5 keen sword of cowardice. The sword is the coward, not the wielder. It needs speech, so it can moan and whine continuously. Spoils surprise by whining - doesn't like to or is actually afraid of getting blood on itself - and so on. A real pain in the ###, but how many +5 swords do they stumble on? Make sure ego/wis/ and so on are low enough that the sword never controls its wielder, or you lose out on half the fun.

And it's opposite

+5 keen defending sword of bravery. Again, it's the sword that wants to attack all the time. Needs speech, so it can cry out challenges during the surprise round - or just before. Since it's so brave, it always switches all pluses to attack, unless the wielder continually changes it - a free action, but still a pain. It never mentions that it changes the pluses, it just goes ahead and does it, knowing that's what the bearer would want.

Here one I have used.

Gambler's Foley

This small coin is worn or carried and can bless its bearer with fantastic luck. Twisting fate does come with a price and the coin will always find balance in the end.

Power: The coin grants the bearer the ability to reroll any d20 rolled. There is not limit to the number of times it can be invoked.

Bane: Each time the bearer invokes the power the DM can later force the player to reroll a d20 roll of his choice or allow an opponent to do the same when acting against the player.

Dont worry about balance, the player may go crazy with it at first but once he starts seeing the downside he will reserve it for emergency use only.

Liberty's Edge

Just a suggestion, If you go through on the messageboards and look at the RPG Superstar submissions (at least for last year that I know of), they did a whole bunch of wonderous items. pretty much all of which are really cool.
