Hey Folks,
Old school D&D player here, seeking interested folks for pbp using Swords and Wizardry ruleset (a retro-clone of the original 0E D&D game). I'm thinking about running Splinters of Faith, a new release from Frog God Games (the new incarnation of Necromancer Games, it seems). Ideally, I'd like to see 4-6 players sign up for this. We'll need players who can commit to posting regularly (daily would be best), and who are unopposed to the 'rules light' vagaries of this rule system. The S&W rules are available for free on Drive Thru RPG, if anyone would like to check them out first.
In addition to posting commitment, players should be able to write descriptively. We'll need healthy imaginations and creative characterization to fill in the gaps left by the rules themselves. We'll also be letting the dice do all the talking, so attributes, hit points, starting gold, you name it...we'll be rolling the dice.
I'll keep this short for now, but if you have any questions at all about the rules, the adventure, myself, whatever, please just holler. Hopefully, there are some people out there interested in some old school storytelling action. Who's up for it?

Tentatively interested here. I've played Labyrinth Lord once, and have heard of but not looked at S&W. OTOH, I started playing D&D between Gods, Demi-Gods & and Heroes and the AD&D Monster Manual, so I have a passing familiarity with the original.
I'll take a read through S&W and reply further.

Cool, hope it tickles your nostalgic fancy enough to give it a go!

I'd be interested - played in an abortive Ruins & Ronin game and GMed an abortive S&W game. So, I have experience! :D
Excellent. Maybe we can avoid the whole 'abortive' part this time around. ;)
I'm thinking about being nice and allowing players to roll 4d6 and drop lowest for ability scores, then assign the totals as desired. This way, we'd hopefully get somebody with the prereqs desired to represent the different classes in a semi-balanced fashion.
Thoughts on what role you'd like?

Fighting-man, I think. I'll take it easy and concentrate on RP.
Incidentally, whereabouts are you located? I know of two OSR-oriented meetup groups in Wisconsin, and have friends in one.

Glad to have you on board, John! Doughty warrior for you, indeed. Feel free to start working out some descriptive details at any time.
I'm in Indiana, not so far from Wisconsin. Alas, my schedule makes it difficult for me to set aside time for face to face gaming (not least of why is my two young sons). Hence, my interest in pbp gaming. :)

Yes, they both fell down due to the GM being busy. Also each game had very few players - a long running game needs at least 5 or 6 people to maintain momentum.
I would be interested in a magic user or elf (if the latter, would you consider using the White Box rules for elves?)
I will ask some of my 4e players on here if they would be interested.

Indeed, I hope to get to that 5-6 players range for this game, though I'm willing to give it the green light if we can get four.
I've just had a look at the White Box rules, and I can see why you'd rather use the variant rules for elves. I'd be fine with that.
Thanks for spreading the word!
Onimar Synn
I'd definately be interested. Are you planning to use the the Core Rules or the White Box rules?
I'll create a character tonight.
Welcome! Primarily, we'll use Core Rules, but I may be persuaded to dip a bit into the White Box for certain exceptions (such as Fabes' elf request).
Looking forward to what you come up with.

Looks like I can play anything. Elf here I come! Anything I should have in mind re: elves? i.e. Is there a particular flavour or archetype to them? e.g. Melnibonean, Tolkien, sylvan happy folk, Atlantean sorcerers?
:D
I am excited. Can you tell?

I can tell, and I'm glad you're excited! Me too!
Now, if we can only get ahold of one or two more excited people, we'll be ready to rock. Then again, if everybody rolls stats like those, your characters will have a better chance of survival, even with a smaller party.
Elves for this game are pretty much the standard Tolkien-inspired elves. Pale and lithe, pointy ears, inclined toward magic, swordsmanship and archery. The usual subgroups exist too, like wood elves, sea elves, and so forth.

I'll roll my abilities now, and then proceed with character creation in an hour or so when I get back to my CHU.
4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 4, 4) = 18 14
4d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 1, 6) = 14 13
4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 3, 1) = 14 13
4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 6, 4) = 16 15
4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 2, 2) = 14 12
4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 3, 6) = 17 15
Ooh, not bad. I think I'll go with a human Fighting-Man.

If we end up short a cleric, I'd be willing to jump into that role as well, since I just noticed that John Woodford already staked a claim on fighting-man.
Also, since people are telling where they are, I'm currently at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait. So I may be a bit time-displaced from the majority of you. Still, that's one advantage of PbP.
Onimar Synn
I might be interested...I've played in another S&W PbP once. I'll think about it and post back in a little bit (I'm in several other PbP games already, so a little hesitant to join another one).
Well, if you're concerned about the time commitment required to keep up with several different pbp games, I can understand your hesitation. Having said that, Splinters of Faith looks like a really interesting series of modules, and I think this game will be a lot of fun. So, if you think you can swing it, I'd be happy to have you aboard.

Yep, a cleric will be a very good thing to have on board! Highly recommended.

Not as good as some, but still OK for the setting & rules.
Talisek ("Call me Tally") Unthraet isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, as they say, but at least he knows his limits. In the army he kept his head down, followed orders, and (most importantly) didn't panic. Now that his unit's been demobbed, though, he's at loose ends. He's not ready to go back to farming again. Fighting is the only other thing he knows how to do, so he's on the road looking for action.

Rough Adventure Background: Kthulhu's cleric PC has been having strange dreams which he feels are a message from his god, directing him to the Temple of Freya in the tiny farming town of Lessef. The other PCs are hired protection, fellow adventure-seekers, or simply friends along for the ride, as you all see fit.
Sound workable?

HERE is a link to a little bit of information about the gods of the Frog God/Necromancer Games setting. Might be useful.

A few questions:
Are you using ascending or descending AC?
Is there any particular set of deities that I should pick from?
Does my extra first level spell start at level 1 (when the cleric does not usually have spells)?

1. Let's go really old school, and use descending AC!
2. Refer to the link I posted above for a few deity suggestions. If you'd rather, you can create your own.
3. I'll say yes, go ahead and use the bonus spell from the get-go.

Hiya. Fabes means me. I played in his abortive S&W game and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I tend not to roll well for stats ... but let's see what I get and go from there.
4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 2, 4) = 14 - 12
4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 3, 1) = 10 - 9
4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 5, 5) = 13 - 12

4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 5, 5) = 13 - 12
4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 6, 6) = 19 - 17
Woah... I'll now look seriously at where I want those to go. Magic User maybe?

If I've got that right, then this bod can learn 5 additional languages, gets a +1 to AC (no bad thing for someone as squishy as a magic user, isn't the best endowed with common sense, but won't blow over a door opens in her face. I can live with that.

Players, with five PCs now on board, we can officially green light the game. Please migrate over to the discussion thread to further discuss character creation.
Meanwhile, if there is a sixth player who wants to jump aboard, please speak up. There's still room for one more! :)
Onimar Synn
I'd be interested if you're still looking for another. Kthulhu and I have played together IRL as well, would you like us to set up a profile for our characters?
I am, and you're in! Six players is all I can handle, so you'll be the last Nathan. Yep, head on over to the discussion thread (linked above) and get started on a PC profile.

Maeve Steel is the daughter of a blacksmith. She was born in a small village that was frequently raided by goblin. She lived a relatively normal life until a few years ago, when a goblin raid mortally wounded her father. Luckily, a traveling priest of Arden (one of the few that remain) was nearby, and saved him. Impressed by his actions, Maeve quit her job as a barmaid at the local tavern, and asked the priest to teach her in the ways of the Sun god. She traveled with him for several years, until he decided to settle down and perhaps try to build a temple to Arden. Recently she has been having strange dreams that she thinks are a message from Arden, directing her to the temple of Freya in the small town of Lessef...
