AC / Stats on armor questions

Rules Questions

There's a few things I want to make sure I have straight about the way AC and Stat bonuses on armor work. My first exposure to D&D was NWN and I understand some things are different between that and PnP.

1. Do AC/Stat bonuses on armor stack? Would Studded Leather Armor +2 and Bracers of Armor +5 give me a +7 to AC?

2. If I'm playing a Monk, is there something like a +5 "Monk Clothing" that I can find/make? I see that to enhance an armor to make it magical, it has to already be a masterwork item. How does that work for clothing items like traveler's clothes or robes for a Wizard? Can those items even be masterwork?

1.) no. studded leather +2 is base armor +3 with extra +2 for bonus for 5 total. bracers provide an armor bonus of 5 also. 2 bonuses of the same category overlap, not stack. (unless dodge bonuses)

2. that would basically be bracers of armor. armor bonus with a base of 0.

very few specific bonuses stack

in the case of 1) Armor bonuses do not stack, the Leather armor grants an Armor bonuses and the brcers grant an armor bonus.

One way to tink of Bracers of armor is this, Bracers of armor +5 are basically giving you a base armor value of 5 the same as some Medium armors

So studded leather +2 and bracers of armor +5 are both a armor bonus of 5. But they dont stack together.

2)Theres a robe called a monk robe but it doesnt grant an ac value. I would suggest reading the

in simple terms look at the games item creation rules You basically Take an Item Say Bracers of armor +5, and another item Say belt of dexterity +4.

Take the cost of the most expensive Item, and i think add 150% of the cost of the cheaper Item and can combine the two.

Somone else could maybe explain this better however. But the game doesnt have any default items like this on the cheap end.

there are other options also. i'm sure folks will post with others.

getting mage armor cast on you.
magic vestment also. (though mage armor is cheaper)
both of these are Armor Bonus category.

Those don't even touch the natural armor (barkskin, amulets), deflection (shield of faith, rings), etc etc.

Sometimes its easiest to buy a wand you can't use and have a fellow PC who can use that to buff you. That way its using your resources on you, not his resources on you.

So you can have amulets of natural armor and those will stack with bracers of armor/regular armor/mage armor?

Natural Armor and Armor are 2 different bonus types, so they stack.

As a monk, look into monk's robes. While wearing these, a few things (including AC) are calculated as if your monk level was 5 higher.

Nope, they overlap and only give you the larger bonus. Give the bracers to the wizard.

The categories are (off the top of my head i can't seem to find the chart)

Common

Armor bonus
[enhancement bonus to armor bonus]
Natural armor bonus
[enhancement bonus to natural armor bonus]
Shield bonus
[enhancement bonus to shield bonus]
Dodge bonus (has the unique ability to stack with itself)
moral bonus
competence bonus
Enhancement bonus (normally doesn't apply to AC). AFAIK there is no direct enhancment bonus to armor class)

Rare

Sacred bonus
Profane bonus
Luck bonus
insight bonus

Anything on that list stacks with anything else. Any two items on the list that are in the same catagory(with the exception of dodge bonuses) only add the higher of the two values.

There's nothing like that in the DMG among standard magic items, and given the number of monks and wizards that would want something like that i think their exclusion is deliberate. Wizards and monks aren't supposed to be wearing magic armor without the armor bonus.

There is the very pricey robe of the archmagus, which has the minor benefit of adding +5 armor bonus to ac if you're an arcane caster so its POSSIBLE to enchant clothes.

I think your best bet is to ask the wizard to cast mage armor on the monk at the start of the day.
