What about a Lawful Evil PC?

Council of Thieves

Hi,
in my group I have a sorcerer, bloodline Serpentine, who has the alignment Lawful Evil (Asmodeus). According to you, what should be his attitude during this campaign? with the NPC? with the other PC (a wizard, a rogue coming from a minor old noble house and a paladin of Shelyn)?
Thanks a lot !

First and formost. What is his/her grievance with the current government of Westcrown? (Bastards of Erebus p. 10) This will set his motivation for going on the adventure path, which is something that is not made clear by the Player's Guide.

Beyond that, the character will need to be handled with some special care, as he/she will definitely have conflicts with both the Group's own Paladin and with the NPC patrons in the first section of the AP.

this AP has as an iconic a LE character (seltyiel)

I have read many debates on this as seelah (the iconic paladin) is another pre-gen for this AP.

I liked Pathfinders take on LE vs LG.

LG isnt necessarily out to destroy all evil as there is always the rehabilitation part of the alignment and the hope someone else will always do better (think catholic priest) and worst, seelah is disappointed by seltyiel's choices and behavior.

you really have to put away 1st editions play on alignments and paladins specifically that we all grew up with.
1st edition paladins will not travel with evil characters and only for alimited time with neutral ones.
this is not part of Pathfinder.

so on to LE characters. What does the LE persona want?
Power. Usually.
The current regime has power, but that doesnt mean that since he's the same alignment, he doesn't want more power for himself?

The current regime treats devils and teiflings as subservients, perhaps this LE character has a different take on that?
What if he is a tiefling?

The Nazi party (and communist for that matter) certainly did alot of disagreeing with one another and backstabbing eachother to try and get power away from one another over the years.
that doesnt mean one of them was good and the other evil.

They dont have to have the same alignments to get along, they dont have to have different ones to disagree.

+1

You can be lawful evil, but the campaign occasionally rewards good behavior. As long as you don't keep the group as a whole from doing good, there shouldn't be that big of an effect.

Make sure your character does not have major conflicts with the other characters. Give in to majority rule & try not to harm the group by backstabbing.

I personally don't allow evil characters in the majority of games because inter-party conflict always arises, IMHO. (the exception being all evil-PC games)

Also, as I've mentioned in another thread (in an albiet joking manner): make sure that you know the bad guys' motivations in Council of Theives. As the name suggests, bad guys tend to be evil and you don't want their motivations to be too similar to your PC's or else they might just try and recruit them. While that could be interesting it could also be troublesome for the cohesiveness of your game.

In other words: make sure your LE character and the bad guys wouldn't just rather work together after all things considered.

I realize this post is pretty late but I think that it is advice that should apply to any campaign, really.
