Non-lethal attacks with Ranged Weapons?

Rules Questions

Does anyone know of anything difinitive from Paizo on if ranged weapons can do non-lethal damage?

I'm not talking whips or the like, I mean bows and crossbows. In the rule book on pg 191 it says:

Pathfinder Core Rulebook wrote:
Non-lethal Damage with a Weapon that Deals Lethal Damage: You can use melee a weapon that deals lethal damage to deal non-lethal damage instead, but you take a -4 on your attack.

To me this comes across using melee as an example. Its not saying that only melee weapons can do non-lethal damage, its saying you can. Nothing is said about ranged weapons being used in the same manner.

If I shoot someone with a single arrow in the leg its more then likely not going to kill them unless I do it repeatidly. I'm not saying that there isn't a chance that I'd kill them but I should be able to attempt non-lethal damage with a bow.

You can't do non lethal damage with a bow unless you have specialised ammo to do so. Shooting someone in the leg is still lethal damage.

Crypt of the Everflame:

IIRC there is a trap in this that uses rounded/blunted bolts that deal non lethal damage. If a trap in a paizo module can do it, I'd say with the properly constructed ammunition a player could. Think of it as shooting rubber bullets.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I am wonder if there is just a feat that counteracts the -4 on using lethal weapons to deal non lethal damage.

Arrow, Blunt: These arrows have rounded wooden tips.

They deal bludgeoning damage rather than piercing
damage. An archer can use a blunt arrow to deal nonlethal
damage (at the normal –4 attack penalty for using a lethal
weapon to deal nonlethal damage).

So there you have it. :)

You know that within the heart of even the most hateful and cruel living creature exists a sliver of shame and hope for redemption. You have trained long on martial techniques to use bladed weapons not to kill, but to subdue. When striking to inflict nonlethal damage with any slashing weapon, you do not take the normal -4 penalty on your attack roll, and gain a +1 trait bonus to any nonlethal damage you inflict with a slashing weapon.

My Pally has uses this trait a lot. It's thematically appropriate, and I get more damage.
