Order #1533767 Missing letter A in APG & GMG

Hi,

I just downloaded the Advanced Players Guide and Games Mastery Guide PDF's for use on my Ipad.

When I view the files in Goodreader, a strange thing occurs- in the Text, any Section Headings dont seem to resolve the letter "A" which leads to such gobbledegook as F VOURED CL SSES, and you dont even want to see what it does to B RB RI NS.....

Could whoever formats your PDF take a look at this? Its makes the books almost impossible to decipher.

I have also downloaded the corebook and Beastiary and they both appear fine and have all their A's.

Thanks,

Steve

This has popped up often. It always has to do with Apple software / font libraries. Surprised you have no issues with the Core rulebook or Bestiary. Use a different pdf reader is the usual fix. Not having an Ipad I'm not sure how practical that is for you given Apple's fixation on controlling the software on it's platforms. I'm sure other Apple users will pop in and let you know what your options are.

The problem is in libfreetype, a widely used open source font rendering library. Unfortunately, the only fix you can hope for is that Apple updates the version they use.

It's most likely that all pdf viewer apps on iOS use the system pdf framework, which depends on libfreetype and is therefore affected by the bug.

On Mac OS X, you can use Adobe's terrible ugly Acrobat Reader, where the bug doesn't show up, but I am not aware of any iOS app that helps. Maybe there's an Acrobat for iOS or so?

Could Paizo not use the same format as the corebook or Beastiary and perhaps release an Apple friendly version of the PDF?

I am truly surprised your not seeing it on the Core Book as well.

I know I do on my iPad.

As to being unusable I guess I have just grown accustomed to it or something because I hardly notice it now. In fact I pretty much read the word as if it was all their. Occasionally I do not know what it says. But it is only in the HEADER texts any ways. The rest of the document has the "A's".

Beyond letting Apple know about it and hoping they eventually get around to fixing the issue there is nothing.

As to Pazio using the same Font as the core book that is the problem. They do and it continues having the problem.

Edit: I also have come to prefer the iBook application for reading the PDF's. You have an option to "categorize" all the PDF's how you want them to be in iTunes and then download them to your iPad.

Another option is to scroll through the pages nine at a time so you have a good picture of all the art work. Then double tap on the particular page your looking for to zoom in on it. Its pretty sweet.

Unfortunately, I have nothing to add that hasn't already been addressed abaove, other than to point you to the FAQ entry about this issue (which, admittedly, isn't much more helpful). This, sadly, is an issue over which we do not have much control.

Thanks,
cos

Cosmo- Is it possible to get a refund on these PDF's as I really do find them painful to read? Happy to provide whatever proof of deletion you need. (also assuming you are a Paizo employee)

I think (given the popularity of Ipads now) that it might be worth putting in some warning to the description text of the product that the PDF's may not be readable on Apple PDF readers, so that others are not stuck with bum PDF's.

The thing I cant get my head around is that the Font works fine for 25 letters of the alphabet, but the 1st letter doesnt? Something weird going on there.

Thanks,

Steve

I have returned the PDFs and credited the refund back to your Paizo account. The PDFs have been removed from your My Downloads page.

Thank you for that Cosmo, much appreciated. Do you have plans to notify Paizo customers when this Letter A font problem is licked? Once it is fixed, I'll happily re-purchase the PDFs.

Northman- I've double checked and you are correct about the Corebook PDF - perhaps I hadnt looked at any sections with the letter A in them. Since the corebook is all hyperlinked together, I'm using internal links to navigate rather than scanning section titles, so its a bit easier on the eye to use.

Thx again,

Steve

I wouldn't say that we have plans to notify customers per se. We have put a bug report in with Apple for this issue, so the fix is dependent upon them and it is unlikely that they will notify us. However, if the fix requires a change in our PDFs, then we will notify people that own the PDFs in question that they have been updated (as we always do, regardless of the type of the update).
