Abberant sorc acid ray question

Rules Questions

Acidic Ray (Sp): Starting at 1st level, you can fire an acidic ray as a standard action, targeting any foe within 30 feet as a ranged touch attack. The acidic ray deals 1d6 points of acid damage + 1 for every two sorcerer levels you possess. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Charisma modifier.

Does this mean 1d6 and only the +1 bumps up every 2 levels, or does it mean it does 1d6+1 at 1st & 2nd level, 2d6 + 2 @ 4th, etc?

Thanks.

Liberty's Edge

It deals 1d6 + (level/2) damage.

I think only the bonus damage increases every 2 lvls. 1d6+1 1st lvl ; 1d6+2 3rd lvl ; 1d6+3 5th lvl and so on

That's what I was figuring. Am I wrong in thinking that gets to be obsolete very quickly, especially as a spell-like ability that provokes? I guess it's the "you've run out everything else and still can do this" ability?

Liberty's Edge

That is more or less correct - it's not a powerful ability that allows the sorcerer to deal lots of damage. It's an ability that's better than nothing and allows a sorcerer who's out of spells to say 'Hey! I'm not useless!'

That's about it. You'll use it once in a while at low levels. At 20th, 1d6+10 isn't impressive. XD

Grand Lodge

Would it be so overpowered if it did stack both the bonus damage as well as the d6's? At level 20, that's only 10d6+10 with an average of 45 points of damage. The tanks are doing more than that with a single crit and have at least four attacks per round. Even the ranger/archer is doing 30+ damage with each arrow and likely firing 6+ times per round. Stacking the d6 damage for the bloodline attacks does seem to be unbalancing. Thoughts?

I was wondering originally because this did not seem to stack up some of the other bloodlines, such as those that get progressively cooler claw attacks.

But I think if it did gain damage dice it would go from being under powered to being more powerful than the others?
