Are ranged spells subject to the -4 penalty for firing into melee combat?

Ranged Effect type spells which require a ranged touch attack do indeed have a -4 penalty when shot into combat, if the caster does not have the Precise Shot feat.

Scarab Sages

And just so you know, Robert, ranged touch attacks also provoke attacks just like a ranged weapon does.

There is some debate as to whether a spellcaster's Concentration check prevents both the AOO for casting and the AOO for making a ranged attack. (Personally I keep them separate but AFAIK there is no RAW to cover this.)

And just so you know, Robert, making a ranged touch attack provokes an AOO just like using a regular ranged weapon does.

There is some debate about whether a spellcaster's Concentration check to avoid the AOO for casting also prevents the AOO for the ranged attack. (In my campaign it does not, but AFAIK there is no RAW to cover this.)

The defensive casting only clears the AoO for casting the spell. You need point blank mastery from the APG to clear the AoO for the ranged attack.

Many moons ago, I emailed Paizo, and Abraham is, unfortunately, correct. The act of targeting, including with a quickened spell, provokes.
