Skills, low intelligence and human

Rules Questions

Say someone has 7 Int.

If they were a Dwarf Fighter, they should get 0 skill points per level, but since 1 is the minimum they get 1.

However, what happens if they are a human? Do they get 2 (The minimum plus the human bonus), or do they get 1 (2[base]-2[int]+1[human])

It is my understanding (which I gained from these boards, though I could not find a link) that you calculate the skill points in the manner most favorable to the human: (2+Int Mod.) + 1.

Or, in otherwords... Yes, the human gets 2 skill points.

It was stated by some of the devs that the extra human skill is applied after calculating the base number of skill points. So in effect, a human with an Int of 7 could get 3 skill points still by also choosing their favored class bonus as an extra skill point.

I know quite a few people houserule against this though. YMMV.

Yeah, and house rule against the extra feat too, while we're at!

Seriously?

Hey, I don't houserule that. I'm just reporting what I've seen.

Yeah officially they still gain the 2. They would not in my games as I do not agree with that ruling but it seems it's ok to dump Int if your human as ya gain the skill anyhow. Dumb human is better then a dumb dwarf.

It isn't a house rule. Its an ambiguity in the rules because there's no rule in the rules for what order you do the addition in (because for addition it doesn't normally matter)

+2(fighter)+1 human -4 (three intelligence)=-1 so the default minimum is 1. There's nothing to say if the one minimum kicks in before or after the human bonus.

How about a ruling from a developer? I am pretty sure that makes it official.

Yes, that would make it official. But not every group has someone checking the forums. (that creative director needs more mojo in his name, i was wandering through on page 6 trying to find him)

A house rule is something that's outside of the rules, such as the DM offering a re roll on hit points if you get a 1 (or my favorite lets make a deal on HP's) One equally valid interpretation of the raw vs another (they do happen) isn't a house rule.
