How do you speak with the departed?

Rules Questions

Hey guys, is there a spell in Pathfinder that allows you to speak with the spirit/soul of someone dead? I don't mean Speak with Dead (which comminicates with the dead person's body and only answers question from when it was alive), I'm talking about a spirit/soul that's gone on to its final rest. Are spirits/souls departed uncontactable even via magic?
Thanks in advance

Contact other plane is one possibility. I don't see any reason that a spell that allows you to directly contact a greater deity wouldn't allow you to directly contact a significantly lesser being.

Sending could also work (with a 5% chance of failure).

Contact lesser planar creature could get a message through. Or you could make a spell or a artifact that allows contact with the dead.

Hmmm basically high level spells to do the same as a speak with dead spell. My main reason for looking for an alternate version is because of the main restriction with speak with dead - the corpse needs a mouth, something that cremated bodies don't have. Might have to house rule a new version of the spell, maybe one level higher, call it speak with spirit.

Sending is 4th level and actually contacts the creature, not the creature's corpse. Of course, it's up to the DM whether you can cast sending targeting a person's departed soul or not.

Really, sending and speak with dead have absolutely nothing in common.

In Council of Thieves, chapter 3, "What Lies In Dust", there is a magic item called a "Grave Candle" that allows the user to communicate with a spirit given a tiny amount of remains of the body. In the adventure, the PCs use it to communicate with the spirit from a cremated body. Might want to check that out.

Maaaayby you need to tell the Wizard to turn down the fireballs a notch.

Greater Speak with Dead: 5th level for necromancers and priests, 6th for others. Like speak with
dead, but a spirit is summoned to answer questions in it's spookey voice. Any part of the remains
(even ashes)is required as a focus.
This spell could be used to make a grave candle, or at least to set the value of one made by a master candlestick maker.
Change it or reject it, just don't insult me, please.
