While the version from the Bestiary isn't quite so specific, the version from the Monster Manual states that ghosts can manifest in both the ethereal and material planes. If it is fully manifested in the ethereal plane, it is invisible on the material plane (and largely ineffectual). When manifested on the material plane, it is visible as a translucent figure.
Ghosts also have several special attacks that they can choose from, depending on their total CR. One of those is called "Malevolence," and it is basically a possession attack. It works just like the Magic Jar spell, except the ghost doesn't need a receptacle. Not all ghosts have that ability, but if it has at least 6 CR, it is possible to have it. A ghost's CR is its HD and/or class levels +2, so it will need to have at least 4 class levels or racial hit dice (or combination thereof) before adding the ghost template in order to be eligible for the malevolence ability.
