So say the Government, any of them, all of a sudden had access to some high tech devices and an interstellar transportation device. Stargate... Space ship... what ever. And along with this comes another planet where we can colonize. Say this world is recovering from some sort of extinction level event. So it has life, can support life, just does not have much of it. As such pure research would be minimal.
Most who go there will be colonist. Those who will be the first farmers, minors, heck it is right on the surface anyway, with just a few engineers and builders. The people in charge will limit it to 3 planned cities with a military instillation in between them along with as many villages as needed to support agriculture.
The going will be slow since you will all but have to plant an ecosystem. But is doable. At some point animals that are deemed with a low population shall be moved there to help them expand. No known natural predators should help many species thrive, if done correctly.
Would you go? If the trip is all but one way? Why would you go? What would you bring with you, beside the obvious, if you could take small items with you?

No. I am a creature of comfort and enjoy the luxuries I have here. I can not really think of anything that would compel me to go unless I had to, say our planet is going to be destroyed by a meteor in the next month.
I would take a good quality knife and hammer.
+1 I'm with the poodle on this one. I ain't giving up my comforts.
I would however introduce legislation to make it a world wide penal colony. all criminals that are sentanced to death or life inprisonment get sent there.
It worked for geoggia and Austalia and both places turned out very nice.
If I was forced to go I would take a k-bar knife and as many seeds as possible for fruit trees and vegis and grasses.

No.
But I'd vacation once or twice there if I could.
But so far away permanently -- no more Vegas? No more Ancient Greece or Rome to visit? No more watching the Vikings -- and Twins and Timberwolves and Wild and Arsenal?
No more Philly Cheese Steaks and Water Ice?
No more Paizo community?
No more Broadway, Central Park, the Met?
No more French Quarter?
Thanks, I'll stay here and hope lots of other people go so the earth has a better shot at replenishing itself.
I can still go to the wilderness and go camping like I'm on another planet -- far away from civilization.

Without the millitary Tyranny, this is Just Ten million Colonists one way to Mars. Defrost the Polar CO2 with Nukes and Seed the Planet during its rainfall period with Sugarcane and Mimosa Pigra. Both are ideal for Terraforming. Once Plant life is developing send people with all the Military Rations they will need for a Life Time and allow them to Grow Surplus Fresh Foods. Shallow Swampwater environment allows for Catfish to swim wild...

Not for much longer. I love being in the wilderness, preferably alone. However, it's almost painful for me to go hiking or camping anymore. Why?
Because you can see city lights everywhere on the horizon, even in the backwoods of Canada, where I used to spend a lot of summers as a teenager in the Scouts. Any time you look up in the sky, you see airplanes and satellites. And the sounds of the highway are never far away.
Living in the information age makes me feel stuck and cramped, wadded up into my little space. Sure, it's nice to be able to talk to people on the other side of the country on the internet, but at what price?

If there are no native inhabitants of sapience, then yes, even for a one-way trip as long as 1) the government foots the bill for some necessary medical stuff first, 2) I can keep my essential civil rights, and 3) I can ensure my beneficiary receives some small monthly monetary stipend.
Besides basic survival equipment, all I'd really need to bring is something to access the Internet and occasionally keep in touch with a few people on Earth.
