Erevale Greenleaf
Erevale glances at the halfling and dismissively states
"I assure you, Gander, I would not dance into anyone's presence. Nor would I presume your trust. Nor should you mine."
Erevale turns back to Hale.
"Vardishal..." Erevale rubs his chin with his thumb and forefinger. "Interesting. Well, I don't want to keep you from exploring the rest of the temple. After you, Lady Hale."
Hale Caress
"Nothing else of interest down here?" Hale gives the crypted vaults one more look over then climbs back up to the ground floor. "Let's have a look at the far-west top of the map, the white spot."
As she's leading the way she shouts, "Vardishal! Are you there? Somewhere? Was it you talking in my head?"
Gander Longstalks
Gander grunts and doesn't bother to speak with discretion. "If by leading you mean she's the first to talk, then aye. She is very fond of the sound of her voice. As for the other...aside from her modesty she seemed normal enough, for a human, until she found that dagger. I don't remember anything hitting her in the head, though I wasn't paying enough attention to notice."
Hale Caress
"Truth be told, I don't expect much more action around here either - but we need to be thorough. I'm still puzzled by the voice I heard earlier, maybe one of the missing corners reveals more." She looks as she approaches the far west, "If not here, then I think the last place we still haven't fully explored is at the place where that blasted sludge thing jumped on my face."

You head back through the monastery to the unexplored bit.
This debris-laden chamber once held a shrine and wooden altar, but all of that was smashed decades ago by vandals. The ceiling here has remained intact over the years, helping to preserve a huge bas-relief statue of a muscular humanoid man with a pointy beard gesturing toward a huge mountain in the background, his face a picture of mortal concern.
LoreKeeper
We've just come from A12's stairs; A18 are the ones that we originally ran into the jelly monster that made Hale dig in the courtyard. But... we're not fully done with that area yet, I think.
Hale takes a good look at the bas-relief, "Yes, this must be him." She looks at him directly, in the face, "You don't have anything to say anymore?"
Assuming not...
"Okay, I think there's just the one downstairs left now. Let's hope there's something for you to do down there, ey elf-man? Would be sad if you came here and you don't get to do anything." Hale's tone suggests that she, certainly, would enjoy the next bit of adrenalin surge.

Putting all the wall carvings, etc, together you piece together that Vardishal was a once-immortal warrior slain hundreds of years ago in a great battle near this spot. Pilgrims of Sarenrae who settled in the region about 200 years ago were drawn here by a goodly spirit, the ghost of a noble warrior who manifested here occasionally to make pronouncements and speak omens. Most of these involved the evil cult of Rovagug and the threat posed by Pale Mountain's denizens. Some aspect of the traumatic death that turned Vardishal into a ghost in the first place kept him from clearly communicating his warnings, but the flock of Sarenrae took the inchoate pronouncements of the benevolent spirit as a reminder to dedicate themselves to vigilance of their land, and especially to close monitoring of the ominous white mountain on the horizon.
The pilgrims erected their monastery to honour their own god, of course, but they maintained this chapel, built on the spot of the ghost's most frequent manifestations, to honour him as a symbol of their mutual struggle against evil, and have tended to depict him in the traditional trappings of a saint within the Sarenae faith, even though he didn't actually venerate the Dawn Flower.
That help?
Hale Caress
Certainly helps putting things into context - but if there's supposed to be some course of action that we should take then Hale is oblivious to it :) ...I guess that she might be interested in looking at the "forbidden" mountain at some stage, after the Carrion King affair is settled.
"Okay, let's have a look here," as Hale descends the stairs to A18, "there should be an unexplored door down here, if I remember correctly."

To remind you: the task given by Lady Almah was to secure the monastery to be used as a base for her re-acquisition of the area in the name of the Pactmasters. You have just about completed this task...
You all proceed down the stairs again, and discover that the heavy door to the west links up with the catacombs you entered from A12.
Hale Caress
"hmmm..." Hale takes one good look around, a bit disappointed that things apparently are concluded now. She returns to the temple proper at A2b and proclaims: "This temple of Sarenrae has been cleansed of the impure spawns! I announce it freed in the name of the Pactmasters. Sarenrae! Thank you for your blessing in this endeavor! We shall see to it, that this temple will grow again renewed in shining glory!"
Erevale Greenleaf
Erevale slings his bow over his shoulder and leans against the wall, watching Hales performance.
"Well, this adventure was concluded much faster than anticipated. Rather than return to my venture-captain, I would throw my lot in with you, Lady Hale. At least for the present time. That is, if you will accept an extra sword."
Romo Vendelev
Romo picks up his pace to match that of Gander. "I see what you're trying to do! You want to take them all for yourself. Ha, that will be the day!"
He sprints ahead a dozen yards or so, and tries to maintain the lead on the way back. He also doesn't neglect his surroundings, and tries to spot any Gnolls or similar beasts.

You are ushered in to the large tent, and a maidservant brings cold drinks and sweetmeats. Shortly thereafter, the Lady Almah comes in. Her hair looks slightly damp... perhaps she was bathing?
"Ah, it is good to see you... and yet, I see a change of faces. Where is Khismia? And who is this?"
She takes a seat on a couch, reclining elegantly and accepting a glass from which she sips.
"Tell me what you have found. Will the place serve as our base?"
Hale Caress
"We've found Erevale towards the end of our excursion. He claims to be a Pathfinder, and I've found no reason to distrust him on that. Yet." Hale explains, "Khismia - I hope - returned safely to the camp before us; I think she was so taken with the temple that she plans to stay at it and renovate it to its former glory. In spite of the violence and insidious infestations, the temple is still in remarkably good shape." Hale proceeds to detail their discoveries and the condition of the temple, the various inhabitants that have been ejected or killed. She also shows the "Tear of Sarenrae", a dagger she explains that was shown to her in a vision.
Gander Longstalks
Gander walks into the tent munching on a piece of goat he was able to locate on his arrival.
He nods in general agreement with Hale's report.
"The place is filthy but the 'rats' have been cleaned out. It should be a decent place to set up a more permanent camp. Anything happen here while we were gone?"
Megan Robertson
|
"Excellent," says Lady Almah. "We shall pack up and remove to the monastery on the morrow. Well done all of you. However, Khismia did not return here, wherever she did go. Master Greenleaf, it would seem that I have a vacancy. Are you interested?"
Hale Caress
Hale looks over to the halfling, she grins, "Once you grow up, little man, you'll learn about the urges that grown-ups have and girls will stop being something to be avoided at all cost." Her eyes turn a bit darker, "Seriously though, if something happened to her - that means there can be something that happens to us. Maybe she ran afoul a band of gnoll spies. This is the desert, if we don't work together, it will kill us."

"Master Greenleaf, I have been charged by the Pactmasters to open up this area, and in particular the village of Kelmarane, to trade once more, liberating it from gnolls and other evils. Although I have some people with me, guards and mercenaries, I require some capable of a more... unorthodox... approach, and hence have engaged the services of these good folk whom might best be described as 'adventurers.' I am paying 200gp per head, plus of course feeding and lodgings, and allowing them to retain the things that they find. I am sure a Pathfinder will be an usful adjunct... and of course you may report back to your Society: they are always good people to have onside."
She paused to call for some more wine and nibbles.
"Do try these honeyed dates, quite delightful. Hale, if you wish to search for Khismia, that's your own affair. If, as you have said, she just wandered off without a word, I am not interested in her welfare. Had she been attacked, that would have been another matter."
Erevale Greenleaf
"Ah. Gnoll slaying. A most satisfying pursuit. I accept your proposal, Lady Almah. What would the next task be?"
"Lady Hale, I could attempt to follow the spoor left by Khismia if there is any to be found. Though we should be the first back to the monastery or I fear the tracks will be obliterated. It may already be too late. Also this endeavour may conflict with the next task Lady Almah sets for us."
Hale Caress
"At your leave, I'll have a look around for Khismia." Hale bows as she excuses herself from the tent, then proceeds to comb the camp and question others to see if somebody had word.

Apart from a few coarse - but unhelpful as far as her quest is concerned - remarks from Dashki about Khismia, nobody Hale speaks to in the encampment can say anything about her at all: the last anyone saw of her was leaving for the monastery with the rest of you.
Orders have been given to strike camp and move to the monastery in the morning, as it is late afternoon now. Most people are busy preparing for the move. Garavel asks you for a sketch-map of the monastery and starts allocating quarters to everyone.
His suggestions are: -
A14: The Library - Princess Almah
A15: Where the baboons nested - Almah's personal guards
A16: Kitchen - The camel driver & his wife
The rest he leaves to people to select for themselves, but suggests that you lot take A18 as your dormitory.
What now? You may spend the night here in the encampment, enjoying a roast lamb feast with everyone else, or go back to the monastery.
