unless i read something wrong(not near my book currently)to qualify it seems gnomes have to be middle aged. is that right?

Nope.

The starting age is 40 years and either: +4d6; +6d6; +9d6; depending on class.

Even if you were a Wizard (9d6) and rolled maximum (54) you'd be 94.

Middle age for a Gnome is 100 years.
