I just picked up my APG today and was thrilled to see the elemental specialist section for Wizards. I anxiously read the abilities the Fire specialist got and I'm left scratching my head. They couldn't have even given a +1 damage per damage die rolled for fire spells like the Fire-based Dragon Sorcerers get? The abilities they do get sound.... nice, I guess. Fireshaping? Gosh, I can't wait to get that one.
Am I not reading into the abilities enough? At first glance they seem pretty pathetic compared to what other Specialty Schools give as perks.

You're missing the point of elementalist wizards. They aren't like evokers or draconic sorcerers where each element is a force of destruction to be bent to one's will. They approach the elements as concepts, and build from them as schools. You wanna play a blaster who fries his enemies in magical fire? Evoker has been an option since the original release, and it even comes with a fun bonus to damage that works with all your evocations. Want to play a wizard who casts based on the classically inspired philosophies of the foundations of the universe? Meet the new Wu Jen.

What I am a little confused on is the elemental wizard spell list. Is it really as limited as the APG makes it seem, or am I just reading it wrong?
I think those are just the spells that belong to elemental schools to determine extra spell slots and opposed spells. They still have access to regular spell schools. If not, man did they get screwed over.

Ok, that makes a lot more sense.

Your not the first to make that mistake.

Silly me for thinking a fire specialist should be all about burning things. (That wasn't supposed to come off as snarky as that sounded, sorry)
I was hoping for something that would boost damage for fire spells beyond the whole 1/2 Wizard level. Something like the Draconic Sorcerers get.

yeah, I get what you wanted. Elementalist wizards are more like Students of their element than masters of it.
It's worth noting that the Evoker ability is arguably better than the draconic ability. It comes up to be about half the benefit, but is usable on every element. In fact, the AGP provides enough new tricks to really make a powerful evoker. I forget the names of the feats, but the favored spell one that let's you spontaneously cast a spell in any slot is a great use for Fireball. Heighten spell, intensify spell, (greater) spell focus: fire, and the evoker abilities mean you could have a truly devistating fireball at nearly any level. Not bad, I think.
