Hello all. Occasionally listener. First time poster.
(I apologize if this post is in the wrong place. My track record with avoiding that is not great.)
I recently received the Pathfinder Core Rulebook as a gift and am interested in giving the system at least a try. I know there is the Pathfinder Society and that it is organized play. I was thinking of trying to get into a game at Gen Con, but first off a good deal of it is sold out. Secondly, I will be doing a lot of volunteering and so my time is limited.
I guess that leads me to having several questions. The first being is there a small chance I could get into a first level game with generics? I'd rather know what my chances happened to be before I tried it. Hopefully the second question won't offend anyone all that much. If I could get into a game, what is the general feeling on people who don't 100% know the rules? I played 3rd edition and I played 3.5, but it has been a few years. I think everyone has been guilty of giving a newbie the stink eye from time to time.
I will most certainly try to figure out if I can find anything locally. Yet I also appreciate any information that anyone else can share. So thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome. I will answer the last part first. Do not be afraid to play an entry level scenario, as I am sure at this point in the young life of the Pathfinder Society that as many as 50% of players playing level one characters are still new to the Pathfinder upgrade from 3rd edition and maybe have never played any other Organized Play system before either.
If you want to play in PFS games, then go here. There are several links there that will be useful to you, especially the one for joining the Society, where you can get assigned a membership number before you play your first game, and the link for the Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play, which is a must for all players to read and understand. But be aware that the man in charge of the Society, Joshua Frost, will be posting up a new version of the Guide, maybe as early as Friday, so that it will be available for GenCon.

Well first off welcome. Secondly chances are that getting into a game with. A 1st level game is pretty good if you can get in. As a certain amount of people alway manages to not show up there is always chance that you can get in with genetics. All I can say is show up ready to go.
On the other hand there will be pregens available too so if for nothing else it would be good idea to get you feet wet with an introductory game if for nothing else.
Hope to see you there!

There is a pre-GenCon game going on at 2:30 PM on Wednesday 8/4 that is going to play Master of the Fallen Fortress which could be a perfect entry point as a first time player. If you will be in town by then and/or are interested let me know and we can work out the rest.

Your chances to get in are excellent if you can get there a little early and be one of the first "standby" people in line.

Nobody's going to have an issue with that. Many players are still making the transition from 3.0/3.5 to Pathfinder, so you won't be alone: Even active players are sometimes caught flatfooted by the changes between the editions.
