Missing a 1st level Dispel or like it

Homebrew and House Rules

Ok I'm starting a new adventure for my players next week and the setting (homebrew world) is centred at low level people. So most of population is of 1st level (as in any known world) and I'm missing some kind of dispel spell that a 1st level caster could use, so the casters of my world can cancel others effects.

Has anyone already made this?

Not yet, but just reverse-engineer Dispel Magic. An approach would be:

Deny magic
Sorc/Wiz/Bard lvl 1
Short range (25ft + 5ft/lvl)

You can attempt to dispel or counter the magical effects or spells like with dispel magic, but with following restricitions:

- Roll 1d20 and add 1 per your caster level (max +5)
- You can only dispel or counter spells or effects from opponents who have the same CL or lower than yourself.

Just some ideas!

Thanks for the fast and precise answer!

or you could let them "counterspell" existing effects

I was actually thinking about having 8 spells. Each one works exactly like dispel magic, but only works on a single school. Dispel Conjuration, Dispel Necromancy, etc...

I agree counter spelling makes more sense, if the entire population has access to 1st wizard spells then there a good chance that somone will have the same spell memorised as somone else.

e.g. how many would walk around with magic missle as a staple, if someone attack you with MM you use your own MM to counter it or use shield to block it.
