If a PC wanted a pet shocker lizard, how much would it cost?

I would say between 300 and 500 gp, after all, it is one CR higher than a riding dog (at 150 gp).

um... I would say that Adult shocker lizards are too set in their ways, and they have to be handled almost from birth if the handler doesn't use magic. Otherwise they becomes headstrong and take an alpha male menatlity (shocking everything) This way they can be bought cheaper, but it would take 6 months or so game time for them to get to the size listed in the bestiary, so that the CR of the lizard doesn't affect encounters that much

I'd say that the variables are too many to give a hard core rule of Xgp.

Is it in a large city near a habit that supports a large community of shocker lizards? Is it isolated on a small, remote island where shocker lizards are rarely encountered? Was it raised from birth by a trainer and being sold as an adult? Is it still a young shocker lizard (applying the young template)? Is it an older shocker lizard that has just been captured and wants nothing more than to be free?

Is the seller an honest merchant? Is he a real trainer or a con artist? Does he even know the thing IS a shocker lizard? Maybe it is just a big lizard he bought from a guy claiming it was a shocker lizard...

The GM can set any value he wants from 1gp to 100,000gp or whatever seems to fit based upon the circumstances.

What is a fair price? Depends upon a LOT of factors...

You cannot purchase a shocker lizard. You have to, (A catch one in it's native environment or B) Visit Professor Oak and get lucky. Also, you can't teach your shocker lizard how to swim. Only the one with blue eyes can and you can't have it. Now, if you'll excuse me, I am going to go talk to this dude about rats and then fly to an island where I'll surf up and down the east coast.

All joking aside, Krome's got the best idea with regards to the availability for purchase. I would say, cheaper than a pseudodragon, but not by much. Pseudodragons cost roughly 200gp.

The PC in question has a background that her family raises shocker lizards. Which brings up another question: since a shocker lizard is a magical beast and not an animal, what skill would a trainer use: Handle Animal or Diplomacy or what?

Random FYI:

No shocker lizards but d20pfsrd.com has some spiffy critters in the Pet Shop!

Just because the family business is breeding them doesn't mean you get it free. It comes out of your starting gold, and if it's more, you owe the family and will have to pay you sister's dowry or brother's bail money once you get enough.

You don't get a prize warhorse for being from a horse raising family.

If you want it free, you get the epileptic lizard the nobleman sent back to the farm because of its shocking fits.

The Shocker lizard has an Int of 2 which means you can use Handle Animal (albeit at a +5 DC).

Of course it comes out of starting gold. Otherwise it's not fair to the rest of the party (or else they change their backstory: "Yeah, well, my family raises, uh, gold dragons! Yeah!") I just want to know how much gold it equals.

Thanks! I just found that rule myself a few hours ago. :)

This happened to me once, I convinced my brother to let me start off with a family Heirloom MW Kukri (Technically he rolled to see if I got it and I did) and the other player went "Can I see if my character gets to start off with a MW Greataxe family Heirloom?".
