Intelligent Items

Rules Questions

I was wondering if someone can explain if I am missing something.

EDIT: before reading below, Can an Intelligent weapon cast range:personal spells on its wielder?

My concerns:

Lets say Im a level 10 fighter and I get my party magic item creater to make me an Intelligent sword. Its a Great sword +3, So its 18,350 gold to create before Intelligence. Its 500g base, 200g for 11 wisdom, 200g for 11 intelligence, 2400g for two 1st level spells 3/day. My total is 21,650.

So for for 18% increase in cost I now have a weapon that can cast Divine Favor and Shield on me. Each 3x a day. This seems a little broken, not only are you saving actions not buffing (drinking a pot or whatever) but those spells on a Fighter wielding a great sword would be fairly mean. The only counter I can see to this is both of those spells have a range of personal. So could the weapon not cast them on his wielder? What if it was Armor, and the armor casted shield on itself?

No they cannot cast personal range spells on you. At least according to RAW, they are their own creature of the construct subtype and do not share any kind of "magical" connection to you to allow the sharing of spells.

Dark Archive

Agree.

I see nothing in the rules for intelligent items that suggest that they would be able to cast 'personal' range spells on thier users.

It would be funny to have an intelligent Greatsword that cast Mage Armor and Shield on itself because it was afraid of being sundered....

But if a magical suit of armor casted a shield spell on itself, it would protect the armor and by default protect the person inside of it.

FYI: Just playing devil's advocate, I dont think it should work but looking for the RAW that says it wont.

Well, if you have a snake as familiar (ignoring the share spells issue), who is wrapped around your waist, and it cast shield on itself, that wouldn't protect you from attacks, just the snake.

I fully agree an attack aimed at your waist would have extra protection. Armor gives you protection, anything that makes it safer makes you safer.

Once again, Im sure this wont work but I was looking for the rule that said it doesnt work.

In council of thieves the heroes find a glaive that is intelligent and able to cast divine favor, are you guys suggesting that this weapon can only cast divine favor upon itself and not the wielder?

The Standard answer is yes the weapon can only cast spells as any creature can, Personal spells affect only the caster.

That having been said this weapon is unique and explicitly states it can use that power on it wielder.

Description
This +1 keen glaive bears a
fragment of the soul and mind
of Westcrown’s first mayor
after the fall of Aroden and
the rise of the House of
Thrune. The glaive itself has
taken Anvengen’s name for its
own, but can only communicate with
its wielder via empathic urges. If its wielder
worships Asmodeus, the glaive uses bleed on any of its wielder’s
foes it notices is dying, and grants divine favor on a wielder
who commands it to do so. If the wielder doesn’t worship
Asmodeus, the glaive uses bleed on any dying creature it notices
and only grants divine favor against chaotic or good foes—if a
wielder commands it to not use bleed in a battle or commands
it to grant divine favor against a nongood or nonchaotic foe,
a personality conflict occurs and the glaive attempts to gain
control of the wielder.
