Just curious what everyone thinks are the best illusions to take at each level for an illusion specialist wizard

All of them. Sorry for the crappy answer but there is no reason for a wizard not to have every spell from his specialist school in his spellbook. Find a little downtime, and hunt down a couple wizards from the area and pay em so you can copy their spells. Makes for a really cool little RP adventure most of the time too.

In fact I usually run it so my wizards have 2 copies of all their spellbooks... just in case.

this was more of an opinion question. Better worded as what are your personal favorites of each level

The best illusion spells are going to depend on what level your are playing at (forex. Color Spray is a pretty good spell at level 3, it's not so good at level 20). The best illusion spells are also going to depend on what kind of campaign you run (forex. in a "knock down door, kill, loot corpses, repeat" game, disguise self won't be such a great spell). Finally, the best illusion spells are going to depend on how your GM interprets the rules. Forex, some people on these boards nerf Silent Image et al to the point of almost complete uselessness by claiming that everyone automatically knows whenever a spell is cast (even a still, silent spell with eschewed materials cast on the defensive).

Your question doesn't have an easy answer.

Keep in mind that most illusions are best cast unobserved.
