I think I must be missing it, but can your mount also attack?

Thanks!

All I've found so far is that riding dogs can attack, but the rider has to make a DC 10 Ride check to be able to attack as well. Nothing for horses or boars or rhinoceroses.

That's right: Fight with a Combat-Trained Mount: If you direct your wartrained mount to attack in battle, you can still make your own attack or attacks normally. This usage is a free action.

The table says DC 10.

What you want tho, is the Trample feat:

Trample (Combat)
While mounted, you can ride down opponents and trample them under your mount.
Prerequisites: Ride 1 rank, Mounted Combat.
Benefit: When you attempt to overrun an opponent while mounted, your target may not choose to avoid you. Your mount may make one hoof attack against any target you knock down, gaining the standard +4 bonus on attack rolls against prone targets.

If you have access to 3.5 material Cavalry Charger (CWarrior) is a must-have. It allows you to overrun more than one creature.

Also if you can get pounce for your mount that's a win too.

Does anybody house rule this down at all? I've got a mounted PC in a game I run who is now getting two attacks while mounted (if his horse doesn't move) and his horse gets 3 more!

I know this is a game of amazing feats, but I find it kind of incredible that anyone (and I do mean pretty much anyone) can tell direct his horse to attack, stay in the saddle while it rears up and clomps some monster for two hoof attacks, then comes down and bites the beast, AND THEN swing his sword twice... in 6 seconds. All it takes is a DC10 free action. Damn!

Would it nerf mounted combat too much to at least make it a move action like Controlling a (non-combat trained) Mount in Battle? After all, most other Handle Animal actions require a move action - including Attack.

Considering that Mounted Combat is not generally feasible in a wide variety of common adventuring locations--indoors, underground, etc.--I'm inclined to leave it be.
