So I am running a Kingmaker campaign right now and one of my PCs got the idea that he wants a wolf pet for purely aesthetic value. He is a fighter and plans on staying that way but the problem is he recently knocked out a wolf with subdual damage and now wants to domesticate it and I'm not sure how to do that. The wolf is to old to use rear animal checks on it to domesticate it. Maybe have him make a rear animal check (for DC purposes only) for a few months game time to show his time and dedication to breaking the animal in? I just don't know if I like this approach though as I dont feel it represents the wolf as the lone hunter/wild spirit it is. Maybe I'll have him fight it naked and 'mark his territory' on it instead...

Any suggestions?


have him find a druid or ranger to help him tame it? it could be an adventure hook!

Well, one thing... wolves aren't lone hunters. They're very social pack animals by nature, you can use this. Make the healing process longer than would normally be the case in a world with magic healing available. Have the Fighter make Heal checks daily. Long term care DC is 15, you may need to lower this or get others to help, you could also allow a take 10. This will give god reason for the fighter to spend several days constantly with the wolf, earning it's trust. You might have the wolf snap at the fighter a few times in the beginning. Stopping the aggressive behavior as he get's closer to full health.

When he's healthy, you may have him run off for a day or so, only to return after he has 'gotten his legs' again. At which point he could view the fighter (and by extension the rest of the party) as his new pack.


I think it depends on how much you think the player should invest in this, and how much the player wants to invest.

If it were me I'd probably tell the player that the wolf is a wild animal and that he can use handle animal to work with it, but its going to be at a -5 penalty (or some such) due to animals wild instincts, which would be little to no investment in game stats, but its the RP route . The animal would not necessarily stick around all the time, but would probably come back for food. Over time and several difficult handle animal checks, perhaps the fighter could befriend the wolf.

Another option might be to offer a feat that would allow the fighter to use handle animal as wild empathy but at a -3 penalty so its at about the same level as regular wild empathy.

If the player wanted to actually use the animal as an animal companion, then it would require more. We have a homebrew feat that lets rangers take animal companions at level 1. So in our games he would need to take a level of ranger and the animal companion feat.

I like this idea along with Anburaid's -5/-3 penalty suggestion. My player seems to be realy into wanting this wolf if anything as a pet. The most I will let him do is use it to track or other standard handle animal checks. The wolf would still run off sometimes I'm sure :)
