Am I the only one who finds it funny that somebody actually asked a serious question in the >>Ask *James Jacobs* ALL your Questions Here!<< thread?

The mid-80s band that was one of the first that could possibly be considered "emo", not the ballet. (I admit, if it wasn't for last.fm I still wouldn't know who they were.)

Also, is it just me or is the song Taig linked horribly generic? I swear I've heard that song a dozen times with slightly different lyrics.

I agree. I have no ides how they are so popular, unless emo music is now emulating the top-40 mindset.

Left Wing mostly. I can fill in at Center or Defense, but I am most comfortable at Left Wing.

Yep. Anything that ever becomes popular enough creates a template for a fleet of soundalikes that keep revenue pouring in. The rule tends to be, people like what they liked before and what they're told to like, so long as you only innovate so much from what's hot to what's next. Five percent at a clip.

Even smaller, but well known bands can create trends that homogenize what you hear on the radio for years.

I've never heard anyone ever mention how influential Layne Staley was on later music of the 90's. After only a few years of Alice in Chaining I could name forty top forty songs where the singing emulated his goat style.

Somewhere beyond the sea

Somewhere waitin' for me
My lover stands on golden sand
And watches the ships that go sailin'

Somewhere beyond the sea
She's there watchin' for me
If I could fly like birds on high
Then straight to her arms I'd go sailin'

It's far beyond the star
It's near beyond the moon
I know beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soon

We'll meet beyond the shore
We'll kiss just as before
Happy we'll be, beyond the sea
And never again I'll go sailin'

I know beyond a doubt,
My heart will lead me there soon
We'll meet, I know we'll meet
Beyond the shore
We'll kiss just as before
Happy we'll be, beyond the sea
And never again I'll go sailin'

(No more sailin')
(So long sailin')
(Byebye sailin')

Thanks, Bobby. I feel a little bit better. I'm probably too keyed up this morning for Rites of Spring to come off safely, anyway.

They should play Johnny Cash everwhere. While your on the toilet, while you're walking, while you're in an elevator, while you make toast, while you do anything! Johnny Cash is always awesome.

I really appreciate the support -- especially considering that we are very much on different sides of the "fence" with that. I've gotten to the point to pick and choose what to respond to. There are a few people who still may ask decent questions with whom I'll have a conversation. Otherwise, people go on a rant and call it a discussion and wonder where the opposing side went.

But again, I appreciate the support you and others have thrown in on occasion.

I think the question people should be asking themselves upon entrance to that thread is "Why am I here? Is it to enhance my own knowledge or just to be right?" Honestly, that goes for both sides sometimes but more so for one than the other.

Mairkurion {tm} wrote:

Meh. A witty comeback was hard to come by. I would have a hard time coming up with a less emo-ish composer than Stravinsky.

The best I could come up with is, "Well, maybe it's emo because The Right of Spring made me want to cut myself," but that's not really true.

It did start a riot, however. Whatever happened to riots as a response to high art? Maybe we're too pacified. I don't think rioting is very emo anyway. They'd rather write a poem about it by candlelight. A bad poem.

Stravinsky's subsequent career wasn't very emo either. He went into neoclassicism, which was all about restoring beauty and simplicity to music, and tends not to be nearly angsty enough for a true emo. Then he went atonal, which is akin to joining "the man" (apparently "the man" is Arnold Schoenberg - who knew?). That seems downright anti-emo.

Apparently I got nothin'.

But here's a bad emo poem about Stravinsky:

My heart is beating
jagged
like the rhythms of the Rite of Spring.
It makes me want to revel
those ancients
sacrificial blood on the soil
(they're stomping on my soul).
I am drifting,
a void,
no happy Pulcinella,
no fiery Firebird,
but the sound of the blood in my veins-
Ooh, I think my muffins are ready,
I've got to go get them out of the oven.

Liberty's Edge

Emo Emu:

A big ugly bird from Australia that wants to be an ostrich, but never will be so it wears Good Charlotte tee-shirts and sculpts its feathers to look like perpetual bedhead. He's really not that bad, except he wants to bring his acoustic guitar everywhere.
