Gathered together in the Everful Mug after a long days work, you are each discussing your recent tasking by the mayor to investigate the rumors of the kobold war-bands. As a group, you have collectively decided to ride out in the morning, and have a few hours to get everything prepared, and make plans before you head to be for the night.
The Everful Mug is typically busy as it is most ever night, with Haggard, the bartender taking care of of several human patrons at the bar, while Claire, the barmaid takes care of your table in the middle of the room as well as the table of six dwarves in the corner.
Haggard is a tall man, bear of a man in his early forties, with a shaved head and piercing eyes. His daughter Claire is a beautiful young lady with pale skin and reddish-blond hair. Both have a smile and kind word for everyone they meet as they go about their work.

Denis Dubosc |

Denis looks over at the young girl and smiles under his hood, but is afraid of her old man or her possibly seeing him. He didn't want a fight to start up and he was very awkward and knew he couldn't score a chance with her, especially if she could recognise him under the hood as she had lived in this town for the longest time. He doesn't realise that his tail was moving oddly as he stared upon the beauty of Claire.
Fiddling with his thumbs he just stares down at the table but raises his head every so often, looking at her and interested but afraid that she would scream if she didn't know who he was or if she knew what was going on through his mind.

Claire smiles as she approaches the table. "Is there anything I can get for you?" She gives a small smile to Denis, either not noticing or not caring about his appearance.
Denis is shocked that she would approch him and hesitates, scared of if she finds out who she is as he finds it very likely that she doesn't know who he is.
"Err...a...a beer." he stammers as he looks up at her, but at the same time tries to hide his face from the candle light, not wanting to be seen. "You're very beautiful...Miss....?" he pretended that he doesn't know her, though it's obvious he's bad at pretending.Bluff: 1d20 ⇒ 14 Heh, did better than I thought.

Kip's eyes keep being drawn back towards the dwarves in the corner. She catches the eye of the barmaid and asks "Claire, when did those dwarves get into town and have they said anything of their business or how long they stay? Also, I'll buy the first round for our table. Might as well be start the new venture on a positive and friendly beginning." Looks over to Denis and attributing his nervousness to shyness and possibly new-found responsibility decides to break silence first at the table. "Denis is it? I don't think we'd met. Formally that is." Anyone observing notices a twinkle in her eye and an unexpected tone of camaraderie in her voice.

Venedictos |

The robed priest shifts his girth on the rickety chair and nods his appreciation to Kiptera. Venedictos has hired her several times over the years to bring him herbs from the wilds though has never before shared a table with the dwarf.
"Most kind of you," he says. "Please allow me to buy the second."
He offers a short benediction to Shelyn in thanks for the company and the beer - a few haunting notes of plain chant that surround and uplift everyone at the table.

"Why thank you... Denis is it? I'll be right back with that beer." Claire looks to Kiptera, "You can have the second round ma'am, my father said you are all going on some important business, so the first round is on him." Claire looks back to the table of Dwarves. "Clan Goldpick, from the east. Didn't say what they were in town doing, only that they were passing through. Nice to see you again Kiptera. I'll be right back with drinks for everyone."

Denis shook with shock. He knew that Claire must know who he is now that his name was brought out. He was the village freak after all and slowly he looked up towards Kiptera. He was confused at her foward attitude, but assumed it was a Dwarven way or something. He always heard that they were known as being very strange. His strange goat-like eyes fix on her nervously and slowly his right hand moves to the handle of his blade, afraid of what she might do.
"Best not to say my name out loud." he warned her looking around the tavern nervously and makes sure to whisper this so that she doesn't attract too much attention to them "There is bad blood between me and the people I call Neighbors."

Denis was shocked how the name didn't appear to stir up any memory or force her to use a whicked tongue. Perhaps she was like one of those girls who didn't pick on him and wanted to be his friend, but he couldn't remember or be sure. It was so long ago and some of the girls that did like him married other men in the village, the ones that picked on him proving that opposites did attract. He watched her walk away in wonder and looked to her father. If she uttered his name to him than he would definantly know him. Everyone in the village has suspected him of the crime he didn't commit but there was no evidence, yet that didn't stop the gossip. He often dreampt of getting on with his life and having the town change it's opinion of him. It was a dream though and many people would fear laying down with him out of fear that they would produce children that looked similar to him or stranger is possible.

Claire goes to the bar and fills mugs of ale and beer for everyone, returning without so much as looking at her father, although he did look to her and smile before returning his attention to the boorish old human telling a store to anyone who would listen. "Here you all are, an ale for you, and one for you, and beer for you, Kiptera here is your ale, and a beer for you Denis. If you all would like any food, just let me know, Helga will whip something up for you guys really quick."

I'll be sure to point this post to anyone who ever asks me the question "Why do you like Dwarfs?" because this will be my answer. Being blunt as stone and twice as hard :p
Denis blushes prefusly under his hood as he was glad he didn't take a sip before this Dwarf came over to him and slapped his back hard and then said these things to him about his love life and what he should do.
"I...I can't ruin her life by revealing a...f-freak like me to liking me. What makes you think she'll even like me? Even if she does, her father will see to it that I get beaten to a bloody pulp." Denis attempts to retort, though it's obvious from the look on his face that he did feel something for her, yet he wasn't going to admit it. What does this dwarf think he is? He knows nothing of my past nor how this town has grown to loath me and see me more as a blight in their city. The Mayor probably invited me to this group because he wishes to kick me out one way or another, but I'll show him when I bring back a reputation of a hero. He nurses his beer lightly as he thinks this, hoping to make everyone in this town eat their own words, but not with violence, but returning with the reputation for being a great hero.

Mercy appears suddenly behind the bar, almost sprouting out of the cellar like a tree as she climbs the stepladder. She comes around over to the table to socialize now that she had been given the rest of the night off by Mr. Haggard. Her face is blank and her gaze is fixated off into the distance as she walks, clutching her bunched-up beer-stained apron in her hands, but when she gets close enough to have the indistinct shapes and smears of color and light start turning into people, she smiles. Noticing Caelin's searching glances around the bar, she greets him. "Hey Caelin. You lookin' fer someone?" Seeing a mug materialize on the table as she comes to an empty seat, she places a finger on the rim and asks "Mine?" It seems like she doesn't even notice Claire breeze past her on the way.

Denis narrows his eyes and shakes his head.
"You don't know my past nor what people think about me. All those who were raised here would be happy to see me dead." he explained and pointed to his face under the large hood of the cloak. "Look at these eyes and tell me you wouldn't be afraid seeing a child with these eyes, horns, tongue and tail." he was obviously getting pretty annoyed that this dwarf was trying to push him where he knew death would be awaiting around the corner. If he lifted his hood up and the entire bar saw him he knew there would be one hell of a bar fight and he didn't want to get this group involved, especially if it involved stopping him from leaving.

Denis looked at this tall woman and wondering why she didn't seem to notice Clare and had to ask which mug was her's. Was there perhaps a problem with her eyesight? He didn't know but looked at her curiously. She was beautiful, but he had learnt long ago to keep his tongue in his mouth and only speak when spoken to.

Mercy takes the mug from Caelin with both hands, tolerating his overeager advances just like every night. "Oh, wonderful. I'll let Mr. Haggard know you're giving away his mugs again. Nice to see you too, Caelin." After a night of waiting tables, she can't wait to get off her feet so she sits down, nodding to the rest of the people at the table, all smiles. She can't quite tell who's under the hood and so she tries to glance under it but it just blurs all together, so she pretends to know who it is with a soft greeting. Turning to Venedictos, she pauses and says "Good evening, uh... father," not sure what title to give Venedictos or if the middle-aged baritone even had a title at all, as she'd never really paid him any attention. Mercy just thought it was bad luck to not personally greet a devout patron of the goddess of love. Might invite something unlucky, she figured.

Claire carries several more mugs of ale over to the dwarves before coming back by the table. "Hi Mercy! I heard you are going to be going on the big investigation with the Kobolds. Wow, that's so exciting! Are you scared?! I would be, those dirty little savages, yuk, they give me the creeps." Claire visibly shutters at the thought of kobolds. It's quite obvious to all around that she looks up to (in more ways than one and yes pun intended) Mercy.

" Now , how do you want to play our expedition tomorrow? I think our first priority will be to find informations. There might be a way to resolve this situation with a minimum of bloodshed."

Denis laughs at the idea of solving this with minimal bloodshed.
"Why with minimum blood?" he asks curiously as he looks at this human and not quite able to place him, then again he ignored them all since the majority of them saw him as a freak and often threw stones at him. "I say, we find these kobolds and cut the filthy things down."Claire carries several more mugs of ale over to the dwarves before coming back by the table. "Hi Mercy! I heard you are going to be going on the big investigation with the Kobolds. Wow, that's so exciting! Are you scared?! I would be, those dirty little savages, yuk, they give me the creeps." "We'll cut them down, don't worry." he smiles, though still keeps his hood down as he was more interested in watching these creatures bleed. "Kobolds are horrible creatures and like Goblins, fight in packs and fight dirty. I promise you we'll sort out this problem."

Caelin McHern |

"Every day Mercy and I thank the gods for that" Answers gladly, then looks at Denis very closely "The past! Like I give a mites arse about the past, it's what you do that makes ya a man worthy of something, so better do something about it" gives Denis a serious look "Death is not to be afraid Denis, I'll fight it with ya if it ever comes looking for ya" looks at his faces closely "Well I'll never know won't I since we never met as children, and we are not children anymore"moments after listening to Simon "Sorry to interrupt ya Simon, I did hear ya, just had to say those things to set things straight" suddenly a very wicked smile crosses his face "Ya know... getting rid off those kobold ain't such a bad idead..." pats Denis in his shoulder slowly, while smiling like he has a great idea.

Simon Bornen |

Simon looks at Denis with a smile to take the sting of his remark out
" Just because they are different?"
Growing more serious and addressing the whole group :
" While kobolds do have a bad reputation does not mean we should exterminate them like vermin otherwise we are no better than them. We must of course place the security of tanner's people before but we should also keep in mind that they are also intelligent beings and that if we can find a way for us and them to coexist peacefully , It would be better . "
Yes , he is a bit of a naïve idealist ...

Mercy laughs. "Me? Scared? Of course not! I'm twice their size.
Bluff: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
"They'll be shaking in their scales, or whatever they wear, if they wear anything at all." She doesn't paint a good picture-- it's almost obvious that she hasn't gotten in a real life or death fight in almost her entire life, and that Claire is the only one at the table who might actually believe her.
As she hears Denis go into the kobolds fighting dirty and in packs, the color almost drains from her face so she hides it with the mug, taking a long drink to hide her worried expression.

What he said did sting Denis hard and he glared at him with what must've been a demonic rage, but he did nothing and sighed, letting all that anger leave his body. He found the talk sound so strange. Strange idea. Giving these beasts who have killed people and that they should show mercy?
"Fine...if we are to do this let's give them a single chance. If they attack then we cut them down, no second chances." he explains as he didn't like the idea of simply talking with these creature and wanted to instead plunge his blade deep into these creatures.Heh, i like it. Not simply thinking exp, exp and exp. Also, don't forget Treasure of course.

Simon Bornen |

"If they attack us , we will of course defend ourselves. If they surrender , we will then interrogate them . After all , the fact that they are moving into Tanner's territory might be because they have been forced to flee something worse and that's something we need to know as soon as possible "

A single chance. Sounds about right. Mercy wonders if the kobolds will give them a single chance or not.
As she finishes draining her mug, she glances over in interest, using the cuff of her sleeve to wipe her mouth. When she speaks to Simon she doesn't quite look directly at him, unable to really make out much from across the table. "Something worse? Like what, you think?"

Brevaddelar |

A gnome with crazy blue-green hair climbs up onto a chair, standing on it so he can see over the top without too much trouble. "Sorry I'm late," he says, "but there were these beautiful butterflies I had to stop and observe a moment. What this about something worse? There's always something worse. Something worse than what?"

Denis is surprised by the Gnome and looks at him curiously. He sounded very strange to be taking such interest in butterflies when they were all conscripted to go off and kill Kobold warbands that had recently entered the area, not to mention he had a strange coloured hair.

Caelin McHern |

Turns to look at Mercy with a very curious look "Did you put something in my drink... because there's something weird talking over here... er... this gnome suddenly out of the blue!" looks at the gnome like not wanting to believe it's actually there and looking at Mercy waiting for an answer.

At what Caelin says he looks into his own mug and back at Claire, going back to tasting the beer, enjoying the taste as it helped dim the memories of his past and was wondering what other strange things he'd see besides this Gnome if his beer was indeed spiked.

Caelin McHern |

"Ha! At least yer fun, suppose I can live with it if she did put something in my drink" looks into his mug then looks at the gnome "I would drink poison if she would love me" thinks for a moment and glances at Mercy "Best keep that kind of thinking in my head" looks at the gnome "Yer not a regular customer, so what's yer name?"

![]() |

"Oh Brevaddelar!, you got recruited too?! Well, you were always good at figuring things out... like identifying that Orange Castor Tiger Butterfly earlier this spring. It was so pretty. Sorry. Oh and here is your ale Simon." Claire is showing how excited she is over the biggest bit of news that anyone can remember in recent history.

Brevaddelar |

"Name's Brevaddelar," Brev says, holding out a small pale-blue hand in greeting to Caelin. "I come by here from time to time to sell my fish, but I'm not normally a customer, that's true. Most people in town know me, though. Do you like fish? I love fish personally. Can't go wrong with a good fish dinner, I say. If you've ever had fish here, I probably caught it."

Venedictos |

"Oh!" Venedictos coughs and grabs a chair for the gnome. "Brev, good to see you, old friend," Venedictos says. "You are just in time. Caelin here is buying ales for the table."
He turns to Mercy. "Miss Ulricsdottir, please I am simply Brother Venedictos, a poor and humble monk, friar, and child of Shelyn."

Denis watched Claire and Mercy curiously. He was surprised how Mercy never noticed his face despite how close she was. He thought for a few moments and decided it would be best to reveal himself after they cut down the kobolds or sorted them out in some other way. Something that would improve his reputation and turn him famous rarther than Infamous.

Venedictos |

"And Mr. Bornen, you are quite right that just because a creature's race is said to be evil and villainous, it does not necessarily mean that an individual is likewise. If the Whisperer of Souls can be redeemed, so too can a lowly kobold."

Mercy Ülricsdottir |

Brev turns to Claire. "Thanks for the kind words, Claire." He turns back to the others. "I like her. She's the only person in town who calls me by my full name."
Mercy tried once or twice under her breath, but the best she could get was a Brevaddleladladl. She'd have to try again later on when she wasn't so tired-- maybe if she wrote it down ten times in a row? She made a note of it.
He turns to Mercy. "Miss Ulricsdottir, please I am simply Brother Venedictos, a poor and humble monk, friar, and child of Shelyn."
"Of course, right. No need for titles, of course. But, it's nice that you've decided to come along. And bless us, uh keep us safe." She gave him a smile that would let him know she wasn't really sure about what went on in his faith other than colorful birds, nice music and marriages. Mercy clung on to the faint remembrance that someone, somewhere had told her that having a cleric of Shelyn along was like keeping a pig tucked under your arm on your wedding day-- just good luck, all around.

"And Mr. Bornen, you are quite right that just because a creature's race is said to be evil and villainous, it does not necessarily mean that an individual is likewise. If the Whisperer of Souls can be redeemed, so too can a lowly kobold."
Denis looks up at Venedictos, staring at him from under his hood and clearly having a look of confusion on his face. He continued to stare at him and watching him curiously, not understanding the words that just came out of his mouth. He understood the language fine, but he didn't understand what he said about not seeing creatures who are known to be evil, to be evil at all and that they might even be good or innocent.
What kind of strange life he must've lived, avoiding prejudice and being able to see past physical appearences. He was a strange person to say these things but also very interesting.

"Oi!" Kiptera rolling her eyes, "While you folk banter a bit, I am gonna welcome the newcomers pointing with her tankard towards the dwarves's table "to Tanner's Crossing. Perhaps they need a guide wherever going next. Girl's gotta make an honest living if this Kobold Scrourge Party doesn't pan out..." She promptly gets up, drags her chair to the other table and greets the dwarves. You can hear her begin a "Welcome to Tanner's Crossing" tourist spiel which fades to dwarven language and normal conversation level.

Hey kids. No subplot peeking! Xealots eyes only!
Welcome Clan members. The group I am currently sitting will be heading out soon to confirm kobold war party rumors. What news of the Hold do you have and are you here to start the mining outpost?
