How to make a Necromancer

Advice

It funny where a train of thought can lead, long story short looking at making a solid necromancer.

However I realised that both clerics and wiz/sorc have the potential to fill this role.

Had this notion of a melee necromancer that would focus on the touch spells with one hand and bring more pain with a weapon in the other.

being a caster mithril is pretty much essential to lower arcane spell failure, are there any materialis with similiar properties but is decidedly more on the death/decay side of things ?

Sorc was what I first looked at potentially with EK (again dosen't really gel with necro but mechanically might be needed)

as for bloodline although there is an undead bloodline the abberant bloodine seems mechanicsally more suited with getting reach 10 and 15 on touch attacks.

The cleric although already setup to survive in melee dosent really have a solid list of necromantic spells bar the inflict line.

Heh I even had a thought that maybe a cleric could get access to both arcane and divine necromantic spells at the cost of not being able to cast from any other school , meh just a thought.

anyway tips and advice appreciated, the more necro and the less reliance on spells from other schools the better. Also being on the frontline delviering necro touch spells is also a main focus I like to use.

Heh how bout Fossilised Bone that has become mineralized with mithril for a more necromantic mithril armor option ?

so how much freedom do you have in material you can use ?

In 3.5 there are several good sources for necromancer types.

- dread necromancer, heroes of horror is an arcane type sorcerer with a spelllist of mostly necromancy and necromancer themed spells and a good number of class abilities. Might need a little updating to PRPG though.

I'd give it D8 hp and average BAB, spell list might need some changes and possibly a change/update to a class ability or two, but it is a fairly decent class if limited in focus.

Complete Mage had an option for clerics to trade away one domain in exchange for adding one wizard/sorcerer necromancy spell for each spell level to her spell list I think, though i cant find the book at the moment.

Lich-loved (Libris Mortis) allows you to heal from negative energy...handy when you're an evil cleric channelling.

If you wanna go mage then a good one is Metamagic Focus - lowers the increase in spell level by one for one Metamagic feat, like Still Spell.

Voila, Armoured mage. it just takes 2 feats to get there unfortunately.

Pathfinder material only, our GM rightly dosen't want to open that can of worms so we try and stay inside what Paizo has done, and occasionally homebrew minor things to suit specific cases

actually the oracle has a power under the bone mystery that does exactly that, let you be treated as undead for the purposes of the effect of positive and negative energy

For a necromancer, it's useful to have a weapon as your bonded item and make it spell storing early. You can then put some nasty spells into it (vampiric touch comes to mind).

what about 3rd party pathfinder material? The super genius death mage makes a great necromancer, and in my opinion is an excellent class (specifically designed for pathfinder).

Really? Very interesting ...

My son wants to play a necromancer when we start our Kingmaker AP later this summer (still in book 5 of Council of Theives right now) and this might be something to look into.

Can you give a good overview of the class (without giving away too much, of course!0

Thanks!

I can always try :)

Full spellcaster (always good)
Medium BAB d8 hd

Rather solid spell list focusing on ofcourse necromancy, fear, death, undeath, but also a few other useful spells like remove paralysis. It also includes guidelines for dms to add to the deathmage spell list (a breath of fresh air for non-core casters if you ask me) from other materials you may be using. It is a prepared caster, with full access to its complete spell list.

At first level you pick your 'Pale Road' which is kind of like the wizards specialty school or a cleric domain. It guides the characters flavor and gives some abilities.
The Corpse mage is more in line with the classic necromancer, hordes of undead will be awoken, and commanded (in the higher levels ofcourse). The Ghoul Mage is a little strange but interesting. You take on ghoulish aspects (including eating the dead to gain power) and gain a certain amount of close in offense.
The tomb mage is more of a caster. Its abilities are based around fear and pain effects.
The Reaper mage is like the anti undead necromancer (weird i know) its abilities give it some serious offense that makes it a decent martial character if played right.
The Shadow Mage is all about shadows and darkness controlling shadows themselves to meet your ends.

It has a deathbond ability which is akin to the druids bond. You either gain an 'unbreathing' companion or one of a couple domains.

The other big thing though is the fetish powers. This is the third option for the death bond. You create personal magic items that give you enhancements or provide penalties to your enemies. You can use these to do all sorts of things, but in particular the ones that stand out to me are the ones that let you fight better, or cast better. They synergize well with certain pale roads.

So basically it falls in line with the cleric more then the wizard. Its spell list isnt as 'high impact' as the wizard, but if you focus it right you can be really good. Several of the pale roads and fetishes are great for this. It is definately a solid debuffer, though it lacks in battlefield control or buffs for that matter.

Or you can use the right spells, and class features to make yourself a solid combatant. But instead of buff spells to bring you up, you use debuff to weaken the enemy, then use your pale road and fetish abilities to go in for the kill. It can wear light armor and use sheilds so that along with the d8 hd and medium bab means you can make a descent combatant out of him if thats what you want.

Basically it is a VERY customizable class that can cover just about all aspects of Darkness, Death, Undeath and negative engergy in magic. You can command a hoard of undead and send them forth, or be a master of shadow and fear, along with most of the things in between.
