GreatValue!

Is anyone else noticing that their house and/or groceries are slowely being covered in the GreatValue logo of Wal-mart's generic goods? So far the stuff seems to be of about the same quality it's replacing. I guess that's good.

Just a random thought.

For me it's the Kroger logo, as I do most of my shopping at Fry's.

Yes but at the same time this worries me on a number of strange esoteric levels. Oh well. We are what we eat.

Well, most of you food is made by 4 companies... but ahhhh, funny how you don't see their logos though.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Dark Archive

Great value, but at what price?

Oh I see their logos, but it's a lot more noticeable with GreatValue. Just white packaging with some blue lettering and a generic description. Also the fact that it's the same for such a random array of products; GreatValue cereal, GreatValue soda, GreatValue detergent, GreatValue flour, GreatValue vegetables, GreatValue pudding, GreatValue oil.

And if you notice it is becoming a lot more ubiquitous then ever before. Not just a great array of products but most every product. Some of the clothing lines are slowly turning to being GreatValue as well.

Yeah, I've noticed this too. Mostly because the packaging stands out so much when placed in the cupboard. Well, that and it really is taking over the cupboard and refrigerator and pantry...WalMart is just so much cheaper to shop at. :)

I have found that this is not always the case. It is however more convenient to shop there.

That has been my experience as well unless a grocery store is running a holiday sale or something.

Direct comparison: If I'm just buying food WalMart and Kroger come out even, which is about ten dollars cheaper than any of the other grocery stores, except Aldi which may or may not have what you're looking for. If I'm buying cleaning supplies, toiletries, etc. WalMart comes in about ten dollars cheaper than Kroger. Item for item depends. Sometimes WalMart costs more on a single item. But the overall savings make up for it and then some. This may vary by region. You may have grocery stores that aren't charging an arm and a leg near you for instance. :)

This is true. I work at a Wal-Mart warehouse, where they store stuff before sending it to the stores. And pretty much all foodstuffs are made by Proctor and Gamble, Heinz, Kraft, General Mills, and Good Humour. Even the Great Value stuff. It comes on the same truck as the name brand.

Of all the "knock-off" brands I will say that GreatValue seems to be the closest to whatever product it is mimicking.

I hate the Albtersons or WinCo generic stuff.

Nope just Dillons, which were bought out by Kroger, Wal*Mart, Super Targets, which really should not count and Aldi. I wont go to Aldi for fruits or any fresh food but canned veggies are cheaper there then anywhere else. I just find that will Wal*Mart the prices for things like toiletries while I may save a buck at Dillons it is not worth the effort to even try to shop elsewhere.

Is this new over there?

I can't remember a time when there haven't been store brand products in many of the super market chains around here: Gut & Günstig, Excellent, several real brands, TIP. Aldi has been doing its own thing forever (not one specific store brand, but lots of them, usually one for each general kind of product - and it's usually big brands with different labels).

The store brands are usually all over, too: Not necessarily consumer electronics, but all sorts of food products and everything sanitary.

The thing about Aldi is that they're everywhere. At least around here. I usually go to Aldi first, and combine it with a different store if I need anything else.

No, store brands are not new. This one just seems a little more ubiquitous than the average. :)

And the Aldis over here are not everywhere. I'm lucky enough to have one nearby, but I don't go often. The prices are fantastic but the selection is a bit sketchy. It's great for stocking up on staples like flour, oil, etc. though.

No not new at all. I was more commenting on how my fridge, pantry, cupboards, draws, bathroom, and various supplies are slowly being replaced by the ubiquitous white package and blue GreatValue lettering.

I've never noticed another generic brand kinda take over like this one is.

Isn't this just a little unsettling?

edit; Oh lynora you little ninja you... even used the word ubiquitous!

Scipion del Ferro wrote:

Not to me. But I came from a rather frugal family and much of that has rubbed off on me, so I grew up around those kinds of labels and rarely ever saw brand-name stuff unless A) I bought it myself or B) I was visiting a friend's place.

My parents always bought the HEB/Wal-Mart/whatever store brand stuff. :)

About sketchy: I don't know if it's a regional difference or just a difference in perception, but unless I want something fancy (which does happen I admit), I can get most everything there.

Not sure what you mean by fancy. At the Aldi near us that could mean things like toothpaste or butter or granola bars, which they may or may not have. :)

It's probably a regional thing. Their sister store, Trader Joe's is pricier on some things (surprisingly not on others), but has a much better and more consistent selection.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

I want a store named Trader Joe's.

I consider those staples. Maybe not the bars, but I do think they have those, too.

Aldis around here always have butter, rice, noodles, cheese, sausage, meat, frozen stuff (fish sticks, french fries, a few instant meals, pizza) seasonal fruits and vegetables, canned stuff like maize, mushrooms, beans, pickles (and so on), something like half a dozen different kinds of breakfast cereal (or more), bread and related pastries, butter, marge, eggs, milk, bottled water, several sorts of soda, iced tea, ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, honey, marmelade...

Toothpaste is also a standard, along with soap, washing-up liquid, laundry detergent, paper towels, paper hankies, toilet paper (which is actually the only good stuff, except maybe some of the really expensive brands)....

If you want candy/snacks, you also have a huge selection, ranging from all sorts of chocoloate bars or confections over gummy bears (and in the last couple of years, they have started to supplement their own brands - which are probably made by the big companies, anyway - with genuine brand articles, if you feel like a real snickers instead of the knock-off) to enough salted nuts, salt sticks and crisps to last you the next two or three world cups. And then there's ice cream (either the canned stuff or on a stick)

When I say fancy, I mean, well, fancy! :) This of course means brand-name products, but can also mean more specific requirments:

Frozen pizzas are a staple, but if you want a Pizza Funghi, or a Pizza Quadro Formaggi, that's fancy.
You'll get frozen or refrigerated meat (beef, poor, poultry), but if you want the stuff marinaded in a certain style, that's fancy.
Instant dinners in general are mostly fancy (if you want something specific, Aldi's not your destination)

I don't know. I'd always feel like I'd have to haggle and pay in livestock.

Even worse, they give you change in CourtFool B. Anthony dollars. :)

I've taken to shopping at one of those or a 'Sunflower Market'. Sometimes I have to force myself to go there instead, and I can't swear to all of it being better than what I'd get at Wal-Mart... but it does creep me out less. What prompted the change for me, though, was just walking around a Wal-Mart, looking at the shape the other shoppers are in, which convinced me to pay the difference in price to avoid (a) looking like that, and (b)looking at it while I shop for food.
