Can someone give an example of a trip attack with a Bolas by a Small character?

Rules Questions

I'm trying to figure out how you make a Trip attack with a Bolas.

CMB uses STR to determine its hit bonus. Being Small gives a -1.

Bolas are a ranged weapon, and would nominally use DEX to determine their accuracy, and I'm trying to figure out why the size of the person throwing them would matter.

Can someone give me an example, of, say, a Goblin trying to use a Bolas against a charging human? Or against a mount (like a vacquero does in the real world?)

Assume a STR 12, DEX 18 Small Humanoid for the purposes of this example, BAB of +4, and they spent the EWF feat.

Are you asking for the justification of a negative adjustment for the CMB when not involving the physical bodies of the two?

Because the size of the person changes the size of the weapon and a smaller bola would not be as effective against a medium sized target.

I'd say a small character who wanted to get the most out of their bola like you describe would simply take the agile maneuvers feat - problem solved.

No, what I'm looking for is this:

What do I roll, what do I add to that roll and why?

It's been stated officially that characters with Weapon Finesse who are using finessible weapons to make weapon combat maneuvers (tripping, disarming, etc) use their dexterity modifier in place of their strength modifier. Ergo I'm assuming that a ranged weapon uses dexterity as well.

You still take the penalty due to your size, your using a smaller bolas which will have a harder time tangling up a target's legs, but you are allowed to use your dex bonus for the trip.

d20+BAB+Dex+(weapon bonuses such as weapon focus, weapon training, or an enhancement bonus)-1 vs target's CMD

Thanks. That's the answer I was hoping for.

What I was afraid of was that it was CMb+Weapon Bonuses-1 versus CMD.

This seems very wrong to me, as it would make Agile Maneuvers basically a worthless feat. Can you supply a cite or link to the official ruling?

Weapon Finesse, Weapon Focus, and similar feats would only apply when you're attempting a combat maneuver with that weapon. For the most part, this would be limited to things like disarm or sunder or MAYBE trip. You wouldn't get this bonus to things like overrun, bull rush, or grapple that don't use a weapon attack as part of their requirements.

Agile Maneuvers applies to EVERY maneuver every time.

If you're a rapier fighter who uses Weapon Finesse and won't be ever doing many bull rushes, Weapon Finesse or Weapon Focus is the feat for you and Agile Maneuvers is not.

If you're a bard or rogue or monk who wants to be all about the kung-fu or swashbuckly elements of ALL of the combat maneuvers, regardless of what move you want to make or what weapon you use, Agile Maneuvers is the feat you want and Weapon Finesse/Focus is not.

Bolas aren't finessable :U

It was an extrapolation lol. Your using dex for your to-hit, it made sense. It's still a GM call I suppose, but a pretty easy one on my end at least.
