Gauging interest for a Star Wars d20 PBP game!

Gamer Connection

It's amazing how a single line from a movie I haven't seen in years could ignite a sudden passion for running a campaign.

"Concentrate all fire on that Super Star Destroyer!"

I love Star Wars. Probably more than a should, admittedly. And as much as I'd rather play in one, I'd also like to present a story that can be experienced and changed by the words and deeds of a handful of brave champions. The purpose of this thread, obviously, is to see if we can get between four and six people who have enough love of lightsabers, blasters, droids and Jedi to play in a PBP campaign...

...tentatively titled: The First Holocron.

Let me get some things out of the way. Some ground rules, if you will:

1: A basic knowledge of Star Wars is required. And by basic, I mean basic. I don't care if you're not an elitist. You don't have to have read the Expanded Universe. All you need to know is that lightsabers are laser-swords, the Force is essentially magic, and that the Jedi employ both of those to keep the peace. Everything else I'll glean over in my GM profile if this gets off the ground.

2: Have the Saga Edition book and know the rules. I will be using the Saga Edition of Star Wars d20. If you're interested, please know how to play the game. Mistakes are allowed--you'll make them, I'll make them. We're human, and we're here to have fun, not be perfect. :D

3: This will be a Heroic-style campaign. That means: generally higher ability scores, slightly more leniency on the acquisition of Dark Side Points, and the seizure of your character if he, she or it crosses over to the Dark Side (with a high chance of that character returning as an antagonist, or to be redeemed). Sorry, there won't be a Sith hanging around in a party of Jedi, heh.

4: Have complex, story-driven characters. I love PBP games because they show potential towards heavy roleplay. This is awesome. Characters with rich backstories and deeper connections to their allies have more to lose and more reasons to fight harder. If your character has a deep, believable backstory, I will reward him, her or it with a bonus feat based on said background.

There are five slots currently open--one floating slot is left open for a friend of mine who plays in other PBP games with me. If he lacks interest, that slot will open up to others who wish to play. If we get enough players, I hope to start playing within the next two to three weeks.

Thanks for reading...and may the Force be with you!

Questions, questions...

1. Standard ability array or point buy?
2. Only races from the core rulebook, or is the Ultimate Alien Anthology an option?
3. Will you allow droid characters?
4. Planning ahead, can you tell us what classes/skills may or may not be needed? (ex. will we have to pilot a spacecraft at any point)

Thanks for the questions! Allow me to answer:

1. Standard ability array, though I may be incorporating Pathfinder's CMD / CMB, once I go through Saga's feats and whatnot and make sure it doesn't rock the boat too much.

2. Alien Anthology is certainly all right, but please run it by me first.
EDIT: My bookshelf informs me that I am not in possession of the Alien Anthology, so if you'd like to play a species from that book, post it here and I'll give it a good ol' peruse.

3. Droid characters are complicated. I'd prefer that they not be used--having said my PREFERENCE, I'm going to allow them because I don't like setting limits like that on my players.

4. All skills will have their place. It's highly likely, for example, that the PC's will come into ownership of their own starship at one point or another.

Ah, Saga, ok. Your initial post says Starwars D20 (which is technically a different game, the predecessor to Saga Edition), and that's a game I don't have, and what I've read about it I wasn't a big fan of. (Also I'll note that the Alien Anthology is a Starwars D20 book, but I've found a conversion document for it if anybody wants it)

As for the game, I really can't say for sure if I'd like to join yet. There's a lot going on right now with my family, and I've never been a big fan of the Pre-Empire period.

Good luck regardless :)

Starting at level 1, right?

Very probably--but let's see if we get any interest burning through here first before we start talking levels--we'll likely start at level 1, but we might start at 2 or 3. Jedi characters will definitely be Padawans, and I'll be rolling up a Master for them.

It sounds interesting, because I too love Star Wars. However, I'm just starting one and maybe two PbP games. That on top of my spending many hours prepping for running my game every week, I'm not sure right now how much time I would actually have for another PbP.

So, I would be interested if you are gauging interest. I don't know how much I would be able to actually commit to it though, so there is interest, but might not be dedication.

Might have more in a week or two, but will try to keep up on the thread.

I love robits.

Floating slot filled. :P

There are now five slots officially open. Tanner, did you want to solidify thy place in lightsaberin' gaming history?

I am very interested. I currently run a Saga Edition game now on this board.

I would like to play a Jedi character if possible.

Are you looking for characters and backgrounds now?

I wouldn't mind playing another SW game. I'll work on an idea.

Yes, I am interested in playing! I was just waiting for more players to show interest as well. I will have a concept up shortly.

Kyrt-Ryder, can you direct me to that conversion sheet you mentioned? Or anyone?

Star Wars Saga Edition has tons of different races available in the expansion books. There is no Alien Anthology book in Saga.

Is there a race you are interested in? If so, I can give you the stats.

No race in particular, really. I was just interested in seeing how they converted everything.

Well, there is one. What is the Saga conversion for a Kushiban?

Hey, hey now! I'm just interested in the new stats! It's not like I want to play an Ewok or something.

Anywho, I'm leaning towards rolling up a Noble. I haven't settled on a race yet (gives Scipion a friendly scowl).

This is James, btw. I'm leaning toward resurrecting an old friend of mine, HK-22. HK, in this incarnation, is a scout class. He's ill-tempered, prone to violence and oh so very fun to play. Meatbags.

Here's the link to view it on the web Quick-View, and here is the link to the File Download

Hope that helps.

What time period is this taking place?

The game is set in about 200 BBY. Looks like we've got about three slots filled up. Looking good so far.

EDIT: Also, James, if you're going to play an HK series droid, please don't play a carbon-copy of HK-47. We all like him, but he really grates on the nerves after two KotOR games. I've seen too many people roll HK droids and then just play HK-47 to the tee.

You're still welcome to play an HK series droid. Just a friendly heads-up.

In the meantime, I have no problem with anybody playing a Kushiban. Yes, they're cute and cuddly, but at least there was a powerful Jedi out of that race once.

Speaking of Jedi, I'm surprised nobody has rolled one up yet.

Here is Sho Larn, Kel Dor Jedi (Level 1).

I went with a 25 point buy.

I will work on the background now that I know the timeframe.

Thanks for posting, Sho-Larn. Finally getting a Jedi all up in here--and it's my favorite race too, but I digress. XD However, don't get too attached to his / her stats. We're going to use something somewhat more high-powered for this game. :) I'll get to that later.

FOR ALL THOSE WHO READ THIS THREAD AND ARE INTERESTED IN PLAYING A CHARACTER FOR 'THE FIRST HOLOCRON', PLEASE POST YOUR CHARACTER CONCEPT ON THIS THREAD HERE.

Keeps expressing interest all over the place.

THIS THREAD IS CLOSED FOR NOW. 'THE FIRST HOLOCRON' HAS SIX PLAYERS AND WILL PROCEED AS PLANNED.
