Miriam Webster says (B) but most people I know (and me) pronounce it like (A). It seems pronouncing it like (A) is influenced by the Spanish pronunciation of diablo.

Choice B seems to be the norm I hear the most.

not only that B) is also the only proper (english) way to pronounce it

Funny really!

I have always called it B from "diabolical" which I have heard a lot.
But got in doubt since Spanish is my first language... and as you said in Spanish it is pronounced like the computer game "Diablo".

Thanks.

I dunno the "right" way but i prefer the first rather than the second.

It just sounds more creepy.. which I thing befits the word.

Agreed. We always figured it was a variation of "diabolical" so we say it like that only with an "-ist" at the end instead of the "-cal."

try this if you are in doubt, havent tested it extensively but it seems useful :

I pronounce it like "Diabolique" with "ist" instead of "ique".

Shadow Lodge

We pronounce it like "A".

Such as in the word Diablerie meaning the domain or realm of demons/devils.

EDIT:

Apparently we're all wrong though. From Dictionary.com it should be pronounced dahy-ab-uh-liz-uhm.

So Day vs. Die, Dah, or Dee.

It's write differently, but corresponds to B.

Good lincs by the way. Diablerie corresponds to A and Diabolism is B

For real words, I find the best place to go for pronunciations is dictionary.com. They have a little speaker button you can push and the internet says the word for you in a soothing voice!

AKA: Option B is correct.

I had to do just that to prove I was wrong on "bestiary". :)

Thanks, for words like these, where the dictionary cannoy help it is really great to have you guys pitch in.

I always come to think of the word "drow".
It was really a surpise when we found out it was pronounced like cow an not like grow.

Man, I've always pronounced it 'dee-ah-bo-list,' and it just 'sounds wrong' to say it the other way!

Oh well. Poh-tay-to, poh-tah-to.

I'm sure that the Church of Asmodeus has a 'proper' pronunciation for Melbrionionsadsazzerfeltselior as well.

Liberty's Edge

B

Choice B is most correct; as the root is from Diabolical; but really; as long as the hearer understands; it makes no difference. There is not correct spelling or pronunciation; that is all a myth taken way to seriously that came about from old Webster not being able to read his Enclyopedias; so he had to make a "dictionary of most common usage" so people could understand.
