Scarab Sages

I just ran a combat with a roper. I noticed that there is no "grab" attached to the strands. I just wanted to see if this was an error or on purpose. Usually creatures with tentacle attacks automatically have grab.

As a general rule I sometimes "mix it up" with monsters because my players are experienced. So giving a Roper 'grab', sure why not you're GM.

I once made an Incorporal Dragon once. Goblins with poison attacks. 6 legged wolves that that had +8 vs. trip.

Don't go overboard and screw your players, but coming up with unique and challenging monsters makes for fun time.

Just make sure that it's balanced and either up the CR or treasure accordingly.

There is nothing about a tentacle attack that requires it to have grab.

The fact that it has pull, which would be fairly redundant if you have grab seems to make it intentional. I mean why pull 5' when you can grab and pull them 45' for roughly the same CMB check. The roper didn't have improved grab in 3.5 either. So I doubt it was an error for this particular creature.

I didn't think it was an error, just surprised is all. It'd seem natural for it to have grab, but it's still a very powerful creature. The thing easily ate two augmented skeletons, and was hunting down the fire throwing mages when they finally managed to punch its SR and drop it. If it'd had grab, the fight would have been over the 2nd round when I hit three out of four players with tentacles.
