Monster Hunter Tri Setting

Homebrew and House Rules

Okay, so I've been playing Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii nonstop lately. Well I had the idea of making a Monster Hunter Tri setting for PF. What are your thoughts on this? Should I even try? Just curious to hear what people think.

I actually really like the idea, though from what I knew about monster hunter there are a few problems that could come up:

1: Very few intelligent enemies. Do you ever fight anything other than dinosaurs and unintelligent dragons in the game? All the humans in the game seemed to cooperate very well just because they need eachother to survive.

2: There is no magic in the setting.

It might be interesting to create a monster hunter inspired setting, but I personally wouldn't make an exact copy of it just so that it would have a wider variety of things that could be going on in it.

First off, let me say I hate you because you have layed Tri when I have yet to play the second game, or even finish the first!

Second, I'd like to say I'd join this game.

It actually seems simple to make. Just have everyone be bounty hunters, just like in the video game.

Actually the 'boss' monsters are some what intelligent. But I do see your point. As for the magic, it would be easy to incorporate magic into the setting. And for the humans and other sentient races, just because you don't see them fighting each other doesn't mean they don't. Also I wasn't really going to make an exact copy of the game. Thanks for the feed back.

First off: xD, lol.

Second: I was actually thinking of using the core classes for it. I thought it would be pretty cool to do.

I'm going to start working on the monsters now. I'm going to try and make the other races as well. Apparently there is a race that is half dragon. I guess it was some redneck human's doing, lol.

Thanks for the feed back everyone!

Yea, I figured that's how you were planning to work it out, lol. Hmm, I'll be interested to hear about how this works out.

Another funny thing about the monster hunter setting: wouldn't all the 'loot' be just monster bones, plants, meat, and mined metal? You would have come up with a crafting system like in the game. Well, you could probably make it simple by just using the exact same item drops and requirements, haha.

Edit: I guess you could get some items as quest rewards.

Rathalos and Rathian should be easy to whip up on the fly.

Wyvern with breath weapon and the Advanced and Giant templates. Give the Rathian Abilty Focus(Poison) as a bonus feat, maybe max out HP for both, and voila! Your first big monster is done!

Or just use dragons. The Rathian/Rathalos are the Iconic Monster Hunter monsters to me, so I thought it would be cool to use them in the game.

Maybe you could have the world very heavy on the wilderness, which is also very dangerous. So that any communities that exist are generally small and rely on either immediate resources (fishing, small gardens, close hunting/gathering) or goods transported by adventurer's.
With that kind of social enviroment it would make sense that there isn't much in the way of "war", though cannibals/robbers may be more prominent. Also, the rules for kingdoms in 'Kingmaker part 2' could be really appropriate for this sort of setting.

With equipment you could make magic items impossible to make with GP cost. Instead, parts from a monster could be worth a GP amount for a magical item equal to the monsters xp value. Or a piece of the monster may be worth a portion of it's CR in xp. (I've actually been allowing players to do this to lower magic item cost for awhile just to encourage a more active flavor for item creation.)

Lastly, don't forget the cat people.

You would still have to use gold for the magic items. If you really want the magic item and don't have the materials you'll have to buy them. Besides, I'm not going to make it exactly like the game.

I've actually been running a campaign based loosely on Monster Hunter, and it hasn't gone too bad so far. The most difficult part is whether or not to include all, or any, Hunter Weapons. After that it is just a matter of converting existing monsters into the games monsters after that.

There is a recent anime series based on the Monster Hunter franchise that's been introduced- perhaps that may help spur on some more inspiration for everyone.
