Help making the Bane of Undeath

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Ok so I've been wanting to do this since 3.5 but since my party changed to Pathfinder it's made it a lot easier. The idea I'm going for is a Half-Elf Ranger/Paladin most likely using a Long Bow as his "weapon of choice," since I'm 99% sure you can use a ranged weapon with smite evil without taking a feat in Pathfinder. The only reason I was thinking Half-Elf was so I could take advantage of their multi-classing ability but I might do it as a Half-Orc (so if I go negative I can use Lay on Hands on myself). As of now I'm thinking I'll start with 2 levels of Ranger (my 1st favored enemy of course being Undead) then I'll take my 1st level of Paladin at 3rd level and probably stay in Paladin until I get Divine Bond (which will be the weapon 1). Here's kind of what I had in mind.

Half-Elf Ranger 2/Paladin 5 (20 point buy)
str: 12
dex: 18 (16+2)
con: 13
int: 10
wis: 10
cha: 14

1: Point Blank Shot
H: Skill Focus (Perception?)
B: Precise Shot
3: Quick Draw
5: Rapid Shot
7: Many Shot
then my feats are kind of open for whatever

Wouldn't a straight Paladin be better ? Also, there's an undead hunter Paladin archetype coming in APG, but that's still a bit away.

I'm not sure to be honest. With only 2 levels in Ranger it would probably even out wouldn't it? I'd get a +2 on attack and damage rolls (along with some other stuff) against Undead from favored enemy which is the same as if I were a Paladin right?

EDIT: Wait, I just noticed a Paladin adds 2 points of damage per level against Undead with smite evil :\ I guess that's what I get for never playing Paladins :P

Every Paladin level gets you +2 dmg per attack while smiting an undead creature, so 2 levels =+4. Plus, you get better Lay on Hands, you get the spells and other Paladin stuff faster, while the 2 Ranger levels give you a feat and that's about it (track and wild empathy are situational abilities).

There were a few Archerdin builds floating on the forum, take a look there.

Mostly true, if the only thing you're worried about is adding up the attack and damage numbers.

But those two levels of ranger cost you a delay in your spellcasting, your mercies, lower LOH, fewer smites, delayed bond, delayed auras, etc. In return, you get track, wild empathy, and a free feat.

1 level in Ranger would keep me on par with a straight Paladins smite damage though and I actually wanted track (even though it is pretty situational) but I'm not willing to spend an actual feat on it plus favored enemy is constant (well against that enemy) and doesn't have a times/day limit. I'm not too concerned with casting spells to be honest, I might even see if my DM will let play the spell-less variants from Complete Champion (though he'd have to change the feat selection a little).
