I have a quick question. I have a Pathfinder society Character who has just reached 7th level. He has 3 levels of cleric of Pharasma and 3 levels Wizard Necromancer. I am planning to take my characters next level in Mystic Theurge.
Lets see my charactes special abilites are as follows
Cleric domains : Repose and Healing
He channels positive energy
Wizard:
Arcane Bond : amulet
Necromancer
Grave touch
Command undead
Forbidden schools conjouration and tranmutaton
Feats: Necromancer: Spell focus necromancer, Command undead,
Leveling: extra channeling, selective channeling, turn undead, Spell focus Conjuration.
Tratis: sacred conduit: +1 dc of saves vs turn checks
Caretaker: +1 trait bouss to heal checks.
For my seventh level feat I plan to take Augmet summoning
I have notice combined spells as the special ability for the Mystic Theurge. What can I do with this special ability?
Why would I want to fill a 2nd level cleric spell slot to put a 1st level wizard spell there?
Thanks

I can't personally think of why you would do that, unless you were able to prepare in advance for a particular situation, and you really, really needed an extra Feather Fall spell. I think the ability is more useful to spontaneous casters like Bards and Sorcerers, since they can use their spontaneous slots to cast any of their normally memorized Divine spells. That effectively doubles, triples, or even quadruples their potential to cast divine spells, allowing them to memorize as wide a variety of spells in their normal divine slots. They never have to double up on healing spells, or buffs.

The only real reason is for special occasions when a quest or challenge needs a little bit more of what you can already do without resorting to wands or scrolls. (This can actually be a big issue in organized play with magic item limits.) That is the main advantage of the Mystic Theurge... versatility.
If you know you are going up against a ghost maybe you want some extra magic missile spells for force damage (and do not want to get into close range for positive energy spells.)
Going the other way, maybe you want to prepare some extra restoration or remove poison spells... both of which you cannot do as an arcane easily.
While a normal caster can always use a higher level spell slot for a lower level spell, the Mystic Thuerge can do that while picking the best of two worlds and keeping only the best of both.

Forbidden school: conjuration + Augment Summoning ?
I think he's using his cleric levels for buffing and summons. His specialization school as a wizard doesn't put any restrictions on his cleric spells, so he can cover his bases that way. He is still restricted to using double the spell slots if he decides to memorize a clerical buff or summon in his wizard slots, though.

Well this was my first pathfinder society character. I suppose I have made some less then wise decisions when making the character. Perhaps Conjuration and Transmutation were poor choices for Opposition / forbidden arcane wizard schools.
I thought that if I memorized the summon monster spells using my cleric slots I would not have to use two wizard spells slots to memorize one. I also thought I could use my cleric spell slots for spells like bear’s endurance and bull strength to get around the restriction as well. I’m taking the spell focus conjuration and augment summoning to beef up the monsters my character can summon. He only has access to Summon Monster I and Summon monster II spells. The monsters these spells summon will at best be a bite sized snack for a 7th level monster.
Originally I was only planning for the short term. I was only planning to play this character once a year at a convention I go to. I have found a pathfinder group that I like and I am playing the character much more then I expected to.
My original idea for the character was to have someone who studied life and death, ying and yang, positive energy and negative energy. I figured out a way to have someone who could both Turn undead and Command undead using channel energy.
When I had previously made a mystic theurge using the 3.5 rules I had access to feats such as practiced spell caster. With a Pathfinder society game, I don’t have access to previous 3.5 materiel. Any materiel that I could use to boost my caster level to match my characters total hit dice has been consciously removed. I noticed that the “magical Knack” trait from the character trait web enhancement is not legal for pathfinder-organized play. I understand that there is a conscious effort by the designers to make a single classed base character more attractive to play, and to steer people away from multi-classing in order to “cherry pick” class abilities. I am now finding there is quite a steep price for splitting my advancement. All of the “special” abilities are class level dependent. The rebuke death, gentle rest, and grave touch will be at 1st level ability. Channel energy, Turn undead Command undead, will all be at 3rd level ability. The only thing that will advance will be the “spells per day”. My characters spells at seventh level will be those of a 4th level caster for both cleric and wizard. A magic missile that my character would cast for example will do 2d4 +2 points of damage, while a 7th level wizard’s magic missile will do 4d4+4 points of damage.
I am not complaining. I realize there is a price to pay for my wanting to have a character that has access to both the wizard and clerical spells list. That is only fair.
I am just wondering what I can effectively do with the “combined Spells” class ability.
My second level spell slots are valuable enough as it is. There doesn’t seem to be an advantage to putting a magic missile spell in a second level clerical spell slot.
If you have any ideas for what i can do with the class ability I will happily put it to use. Thanks.

Thank you Necroluth, I hadn’t thought of using a spontaneous spell casting class. The combined spells class feature might be very interesting with a 3rd level sorcerer, 3rd level Oracle, 1st level mystic theurge.
Thazar thank you for the suggestion about squeezing a couple more spells out. I just looked at the cost of a 3rd level wand of magic missiles. At 11,250, my character can’t afford one. Also he doesn’t have quite enough prestige to buy one. He has 25 prestiges, and he would need 27 prestiges in order to be able to buy one.
Gobez, to answer your question I was taking spell focus conjuration and augment summoning to beef up my clerical summon monster spells.

Just remember that certain classes don't get 2nd level spells until 4th level (e.g. sorcerer), so you can't get into mystic theurge as quickly as you can with the standard cleric/wizard route.

some spells are on the cleric list , lower than they appear for the wizard list. or vice versa.
you could use empty 2nd level cleric slots to get more magic missile spells, fill empty 2nd level wizard spell slots with cure spells, etc. its not super handy all the time.
for an oracle/sorcerer it doesn't even come into play at all. ( that's not your case, its just a for instance )

Ursineoditty,
As Werepox47 just mentioned, back in Nov' 09 when i made the character, I was pleased that I had discovered that had found a way I could have a character that could both command and turn the undead.
I only expected to play this character once a year at a local con in Vermont called Carnage on the mountain. I really was only expecting to get the character up to 4th level or so.
Philisophically, I noticed since Pharasma has both the death and life domains, I thought in terms of ying and yan, in order to fully understand life, you have to understand death, and vice versa. Hence the positive and negative energy.....at the time Command and Turn undead. Versatile channeler was the feat I would have built my character around, but this was well before the publication of Ultimate Magic.
I had to move down to North Carolina to the Triangle area (Durham Raleigh Chapel hill) area for a while, and i found an active PFS group to play with.
I quickly realized that my channel / command idea wouldn't work, because I would have had to multiclass and advance equally in both classes......it wasn't going to work.....
So I then went into Mystic Theurge.
After playing through the Eyes of the Ten arch, and playing "Race for the Rune carved Key" my character is now 14 level ( cleric 3 / Necromancer 3 / Mystic theurge 8)
And as Were Pox mentioned my character uses necromancy against the undead. My character will not cast Animate dead.
He uses spells like Ray of Enfeeblment, Command Undead, Halt Undead, Enervation, Suffocation, and Undeath to death.
Spectral hand is a very useful spell. I have been using it to deliver my clerical domain powers for Repose and Healing ( gentle rest and rebuke undead) and my necromancer power: grave touch.
Also the spectral hand is extremely usfull for delivering Cure spells. A cure serious wounds spell is very useful for the party fighter, and it is also very useful for tagging undead with.
Well my character isn't optamized, i have made mistakes making the character, Ie" forbidden schools transmutation and conjuration, and having selective channel, and Extra channel, and sacred conduit trait.....well there we are.
I still have had fun playing the character...and hopefully i will be able to continue playing hime every so often.
Sorry for the ramble.
