A witch question

Rules Questions

I found an earlier thread talking about evil eye working on constructs and to ignore the fluff. I am have a similar question about cackle. if the witch or one of the creature with a hex on it were silenced does this ability still work? (or if the creature was deaf)

The other question was how would improve familiar work, which looks like a question that will have to wait for the APG.

The Exchange

Although it doesn't say anything about it being a sonic effect, I would personally rule that the witch would have to be able to cackle to activate it (ie. be able to laugh, ie. not being silenced), but that's the only limit I would put on it. It seems to me that it's the action of cackling that triggers the effect, it doesn't really matter whether or not the person to be affected can hear you.

Of course, with the rules that we were given? No such limitation, but it might just be an issue that they overlooked seeing as it was a rough draft for all intents and purposes.

Cackle is a supernatural ability. Silence would only matter if it were spell-like.

Since Celestial and Fiendish animals are available as improved familiars, I'd just upgrade the existing familiar with one of those templates. Anything else would have to be completely homebrew.

Actually, even as a spell-like ability it would still work when silenced since spell-like abilities have no verbal component.

True, I'd forgotten about that.

If I were DMing I would rule that Cackle requires you to cackle. However, that would be a house rule since (su) abilities do not require verbal components.

I would point out that you can cackle in a silenced area -- just no one will hear it.

And I would argue that that is even creepier.

So the question becomes: Must a creature hear the witch's cackle for the hex to be extended?

And does it cause a tree to fall?

And will that tree ever shut up about how it fell...

Not if the trees a gamer... "Dude, I'm serious, one more round and I'd have had that logger flanked, but the stupid Elm Paladin had to go get distracted by some innocent seedling NPC who wandered into the battle...."

Druid says no.

I know this thread is really old, but it's funny.
