The Heirloom Weapon trait in Adventurer's Armory states that it grants proficiency for a single weapon. If that weapon is exotic like a shotel then I assume it grants the exotic weapon proficiency for that item. If the weapon has two possible proficiencies such as a bastard sword, does it grant the martial or the exotic proficiency?

No sure of the traint you speak of but the bastard sword has 1 feat not 2. It may be used as a martial two handed weapon if you can use Martial weapons but there really is no such thing as Martial weapon bastard sword. If you have the exotic weapon bastard sword feat you can use it one or two handed.

If you don't have martial weapon proficiency as a class ability then you could probably take the martial weapon proficiency feat to use the bastard sword two handed. For example if you're 1st level and don't have a BAB of +1 for the exotic feat.
The trait grants proficiency, but is that as a 1 handed or 2 handed weapon?

Why would you take the martial feat and gain two handed use when you can take the exotic weapon feat and use it one and two handed?
The point is taking it as a martial feat is a waste of a feat when taking it as a exotic feat allows you to use it one or two handed. As I said there really is no such thing as a bastard sword martial weapon feat.
If you have greatsword however you could use a bastard sword two handed more or less. But if ya want to blow two feats on it I guess you could.
Ok having now read the trait. I say you could use it one or two handed as you in effect would have exotic weapon bastard sword feat with that one weapon only. Not any other weapon of that type.

I agree - if you can get your GM to play along, you can have your pick of any available weapons, exotic or not. But you had better take REALLY good care of it.

If you have exotic profiency with bastard sword, you can use it however you want.
If you have martial proficiency, you can only use it in one way.
Ergo, the trait would let you use the bastard sword however you please.

What if the heirloom was enchanted to have the transformative quality? Would you then be proficient in whatever type of weapon you turned your heirloom weapon into? After all, you are proficient in THAT weapon.
Also, as a curious aside (not to derail), if you turned your weapon into something like, say, a whip, would it suddenly be easier to sunder, or would the weapon hardness and hit points remain the same?

I would say yes.
Break out some of that She-ra action with some sword-to-rope, and sword-to-shield action.
however again, it's YOUR magic weapon your proficient in, you know how IT works... not others of the same type.

Just wanted to point out Heirloom Weapon caught an errata. Now you can only get a non masterwork simple or martial weapon, then you get one of three options, one of which is proficiency with said weapon.
