so I am running a campaign and I need help with a guardian.
Background info is the PCs are being tricked by an evil sorceress. She is being barred from entering a Chamber until the guardian is dead. She is not strong enough/can not enter the tomb, because she is evil. So she has tricked the PCs into killing Kin of the Guardian. They were sent to destroy and evil cult (it is the guardian's kin, who actually lead a resistance group). She has sent word to the Kin that Imperialist strike force is out to destroy them. The Kin will then Ambush the party thus leaving no room for a peaceful encounter. Originally I was going to have the Kin be a sorcerer with a draconic bloodline, and have the guardian be a dragon. the only thing is when the group will face this guardian they will only be a APL 5. Is a dragon too tough? I don't want them fighting a young medium size dragon it just looks silly. I was thinking of making it a half-celestial guardian but now I am rethinking it. Anyone have any helpful suggestions?

So are you looking for it to be at least Large sized, then? Do you want it brutish or smart, skillful or primal, etc?

it needs to be good aligned. Large size is preferable. intelligent but not smart enough to be calm when ambushing his kins killer.
A lillend is an option, but might be too intelligent/skilled/resourceful. You could reskin a Lamia as a "lesser lillend" which would work nicely, I think. You could use a chimera with a metallic head instead of a chromatic one, and make it CG instead of CE. A metallic-coloured wyvern would also work nicely.
Personally, I'd use the Lamia-as-lillend and replace Charm Person with Cure Serious.

I am not familiar with a lillend.

Naga-like angels protect things (typically things of great aesthetic beauty, works of art, etc)

How about Half-Celestial Minotaur?
Challenge Rating 6, Large Size, looks intimidating, sports great, golden wings and possibly silver horns and hooves, wields an impressive greataxe and has this menacing air about it.
"Me am Krunk. Me guard this here tomb for Master. Master always kind to Krunk. Krunk now angry at you for killing family. What you say in deff... defian... What you say now?"

Define "do evil."
I'm still rooting for Half-Celestial Werebear.

As an alternative, there was a spell in 3.5 Book of Exalted deeds that allowed the caster to imprison an evil creature for some amount of time. If the creature stayed imprisoned for the full duration, it's alignment changed to good and it gained a template of some sort. It would be pretty cool to have had a powerful cleric seek out an evil creature, convert them to the side of good, and have them gaurd the area as penance for their sins.

Well, it's always perfectly within the rules to just tell your party "The big golden gleaming bull-man before you is a ... I need a Knowledge (Planes) check, please (player tells you his result) ... bovine archon, one of a rarer breed of archons that were often used for guard duty. The problem with them was always that they couldn't keep their temper properly, which often resulted in innocents getting hurt. Might have something to do with their physical similarity to minotaurs..."
