Any way to Summon creatures not already on the summon list?

Rules Questions

Without creating a new spell?

I.e. summmon a CR 1/3rd Celestial Cat instead of a CR 1/3rd Celestial Dog.

And before anyone says it is only possible to summon Fiendish Cats is wrong. :-P

Ask your DM.

There's no reason different cultures/character-concepts shouldn't have different lists.

Just make sure it's balanced with what is on the list and get DM approval.

Other than planar ally, planar ally which allow you much more leeway in what you can summon there is no way in the rules to summon something outside the list.

As was mentioned above you GM may well flex with a reasonable request, I certainly would.

I had a player that wanted to specialize in summoning spiders. He didnt want to summon anything else. This was back in the 3.5 days so i could find more then enough variations, as well as adding in some templates to cover the full range of summons with just spiders. So I think if your gm is willing to work with you, i dont see a problem with looking for other comparable monsters to summon.

There is also a really good dragon magazine article that details adding creatures to the lists for summon I, II, III etc.

It was called the Summoners circle. I don't have it handy, but it put definite restrictions on adding new ones.

I can look it up later if interested....

I'm hoping that there will be an expanded list of summoned monsters (and nature's allies) in the APG or 2nd Bestiary. Seems either book would make a perfect place for an expanded list to be included.

This would be a great article for the GM Guide (a guide to how to substitute creatures without disrupting balance) or maybe a blurb on alternate summoning lists for different cultures/regions in the updated campaign setting.
