A player obsessed with Wolvie

So, have a player that has always been obsessed with Wolverine. After 6 years playing with him (and trying not to give into the obsession) I made a NPC that is similar in nature to Wolverine. As they travel together I had planned onhis abilities to be completely natural (or supernatural) and he was going to be killed off as a contact once he had served as plot hammer a few times.

Now I was thinking I might reward my player with a treat - a Weapon of Legacy - or sorts and would love feedback or ideas on rituals he would need to gain the abilities.

Wielder
Level Abilities
1 Adamantine Bladed Gauntlets –
Retractable/Extendable (70% to be able to control and extend blades)
2 Rage ability (as Barbarian), (80% to extend)
3 +1, (90% to extend)
4 Tracking Ability(as Ranger), Retract/Extend at will
5 Keen
6 Fast Healing 1, (Adamantine begins to bond with host –
adamantine fuse into hands and skeleton) Adamantine Skeleton
(Lightly engulfed skeleton – Light fortification 25%)
7 DR 1/-
8 Scent Ability
9 +2
10 Fast Healing 2, Adamantine Skeleton (Minor engulfed skeleton
– Minor fortification 50%)
11 DR 2/-
12 +3
13 Fast Healing 3
14 DR 3/-
15 Adamantine Skeleton (Moderately engulfed skeleton
– Mod fortification 75%)
16 Fast Healing 4
17 +4
18 DR 4/-
19 Fast Healing 5, Adamantine Skeleton (Fully engulfed skeleton
– Heavy fortification 100%)
20 +5 Keen Adamantine Bladed Gauntlets, DR 5/-

Can they be removed?

Does the skeleton remain after the items are removed?

I am not sure what aspects are permanent to the wielder and which are due to the item.

I think the first thing would be he has to bond with the items (ie graft them to his skeleton to begin the process....

I suspect that he will have check penalties to skills. I imagine swimming will be hard....

Sounds similar to the fiendish grafts.....

Sounds a bit too powerful.

I'd say break it up into a Fiendish Graft (as mentioned) for the skeleton (combined with a Weapon of Legacy?), the spiked gauntlet (Weapon of Legacy), and do a combination of magic items for the Fast Healing and DR (or make him take levels of Barbarian).

In the end, it just sounds too powerful though. I've never played anything really high level, but the DR and Fast Healing would be tough considering the Fortification.

Or make it a ritual spell\possession type thing. You're NPC Wolvie dies and the wolverine parts jump to a new host.

All good ideas. Havent considered if they can be removed or not...

Maybe if he "wants" to take them off he has to make a will save and maybe if he goes into rage it acts as confusion spell in the begining and he might not be able to control himself vs friends or enemys?

Yeah and maybe take away the DR? And make it armor restricted - like a monks ability so he doesnt go stacking armor effects onto it?

Give it to him. Then have him meet a powerful sorcerer with the "Control Magnetism" spell. Then have the skeleton burst forth from every pore in his body. Then hand him 3d6 and a blank character sheet.

+1.

Is Adamantine magnetic?

Every metal in the marvel universe is magnetic.

maybe he should go with silver???

anyone know where to find the "control magnetism" spell?

Plus can we have the body, that would make for a cool undead....

If we go with Adamantine = Adamantium, then yes.

Magneto ripped it out of Wolvie in the comics (when they were on the moon no less!) and the movies used it as a dramatic stop to prevent Hugh Jackman from flipping out and killing the Brotherhood of Mutants. ^_~

Liberty's Edge

According to John Byrne, Wolverine was especially surprised when Magneto took control of his claws “… since Adamantium is non-magnetic. But Magneto… is not just dealing with metal anymore – he can control anything which generates an electro-magnetic field, which includes the human body. That's how he was able to… manipulate Wolverine's claws.”

-Wolverine: The Evolution of a Character (1986)-

The incident he's referring to was in X-Men #112 (1978,) long before Mags pulled the adamantium from Wolvie's bones. Obviously, this is one of those things that has been retconned or forgotten by writers who came after Byrne. It's probably best and easiest to just say adamantium is magnetic since this would mean Magneto could just control anybody like a puppet though he's rarely actually done so.

My name is Velcro Zipper, and I'm a huge geek. Thank you.

I may be wrong, but if I remember correctly, everything is magnetic to some degree. The problem is getting all of your atomic poles arranged in the same direction. I seem to remember seeing something about them polarizing a frog once, and making it levitate with a magnet.
Or I may just be nuts and delusional.

Wow, lol this post kinda went a tad off track. hehe. um...back to my weapon of legacy, lol

Should it self graft to the person? and if so, how could they remove it and does the skeletal metal have to be removed as well or just retracts if gauntlets are taken off....

Have you considered giving him the Feral template from Savage Species?

I'm a bit of a freak for Wolverine as well (my very first character WAS Wolverine in Heroes RPG), and a couple of characters ago had the taste for adamantium fun again and this worked really well.

Remember the time she kicked that ghost touch-enabled demon's ass all by herself? Man. The GM got to use nearly all of his maps of the mansion during that session.

I do kinda wonder why they brought her back just for a replay of the whole "Kitty is stuck in a phased state" sub-plot. But yes, Kitty is made of awesomesauce. Beyond just her powers (which are themselves pretty awesome):

Has a lifetime's worth of training in ninjitsu and various other martial arts
Trained pilot on various terrestrial and extraterrestrial craft
Brilliant in the field of computer science and electronics
Trained professional-level dancer
Had a pet dragon for a friend for an extended period
Has singlehandedly saved the Earth at least once

And despite all of this, and the insanity of her life, she still manages to be one of the most down-to-earth, relatable, NORMAL characters in comic books.

I once rolled a character similar to the Wolvie persona your player is going for. We didn't have access to Weapons of Legacy at that time, so we made the character a different way(but no less potent). All of this was done with the DM's permission and some house-ruling, so take it with a grain of salt.

Adamantine bladed-gauntlets for the win. Spiked gauntlets just don't do the damage justice IMO. I also used a pair of Caster/Storing gloves keyed to store what was on the back of the hand, instead of in the palm of. This allowed me to extend/retract my blades/claws.

To add a little bit of "Berzerker Rage", I took levels of Ranger with the Wild Shape variant from Unearthed Arcana. Essentially you forfeit your combat style feats and gain Wild Shape(just take TWF as normal feats), and used the Lion's Pounce WS feat to make a full round of attacks at the end of a charge. I got this idea after seeing Wolvie do a similar attack in the Marvel Ultimate Alliance game.

As to your question regarding the skeletal graft, I propose a couple ideas. First, maybe it is part of the ritual to gain the full power of the Legacy weapons; perhaps the player needs to have this graft done to him to allow the weapons to work.

Secondly, maybe the adamantine skeleton effect is only active while weilding the gauntlets; we are dealing with powerful magic after all, so the skeletal graft wouldn't need to be permanent in this case. Maybe it's just an effect that comes with wearing the gauntlets.
