There was this exact thing in a novel that I read a long time ago.
I think it was Piers Anthony
the main character was a bard
and he had a song battle with another bard and the death song was
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.
Anyone remember this?
I dont know the one your talking about but if you like musical heroes then I would suggest "The Soprano Sorreress"
Fully trained opera singer from our world gets high jacked to a world where music is magical power. Her highly trained voice made her the elminster/raistlinn power of the world and she started makeing some serious changes.

Am I the only one that uses Zeppelin songs for Bards?
I was going to mention that. I think they have 3 different songs that reference Tolkien. Plus, there is the Immigrant Song, which seems to be about viking raiders...
"
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
Hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new land,
To fight the horde, sing and cry: Valhalla, I am coming! "

Yeah that was actually a very enjoyable bood and one of the few to portray a bard as really powerful.

Anything by Iced Earth, Demons and Wizards, Blind Guardian, or Manowar, and a lot of stuff by Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, Nightwish, Sirenia, Tristania, and Dream Theater might be appropriate.
I could go on or delve into specific songs by bands that don't have as many "fantasy bard"-ish songs on their discography but then I'd be here all night ;P

If you want a little humor there's always the "Bard on the Run' stuff from the old Dragon magazines. A fighter favorite in my group was the ZZ top cover Steel Dressed Man
I know this thread is old, but I got to thinking about my song....
I wrote "Steel Dressed Man" and happy to see your group liked it!

Off the top of my head there's Manowar, Hammerfall, Grand Magus, Dio, Blackmore's Night, Blackmore's Rainbow's first 3 albums, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Demons and Wizards, Sonata Arctica, Blind Guardian, Helloween's "Keeper of the Seven Keys" and "Keeper of the Seven Keys, Part 2", Jorn, Turisas, and Astral Doors.

OH, and Rhapsody of Fire, Dragonforce, and older Uriah Heep from the early to mid 70s. Metallica's first 3 albums are pretty good for things, too.
I built an entire adventure using songs from Blackmore's Rainbow and Ronnie James Dio's solo works. The adventure was called "Sacred Heart" and it was inspired by the album of the same name.
