I've got 3 of these.
1) Mind flayer fighter. Max out your STR and CHA so you do massive damage and have a strong Mind Blast, Then get a weapon with a good crit modifier (not threat range). Then take death blow (standard action coup de grace) and you have an instant kill fighter. further increased by a small dip into rogue for sneak attack.
2) (race not important) Hulking hurler with a bag of tricks (preferably one or two of each kind) along with handle animal. If you don't immediately meet the prerequisites, try taking some ranger levels (wild empathy) this can also work well (GM discretion) with a small character.
3) Troll fighter or Barbarian. Best for solo campaigning, this character will be a troll king. equip him with acid or fire (preferably both) resist armor and give him 2H acid/fire weapon to destroy any troll who opposes you.

A few years ago, while between real campaigns, we did a brief campaign like this.
One of my Players made a half-troll Dragonborn (Red) and was immune to fire. Trolls that are immune to fire are insanely strong. He went Barbarian all the way.
If I ever get the chance to run a PC in a game like this, though, I'm going with Rakshasa. And not the crap 3.5 Rakshasa but the truer to the past Rakshasa: immune to most spells instead of the nerfed SR.

Yes, I was refering to your #3. We only played that campaign for about 6 or so sessions -- it's just not as great as standard races in standard D&D -- but, of course, it is really fun to do every once in a while.
The Player that played the Troll was certainly the most powerful.
Another Player played a winged Kobold with gross class levels from the Bo9S -- very strong and the best character concept. Another played a mind flayer wizard -- the build wasn't very strong at all. There was also an Astral Deva who would forever spend his XP on Race levels and never take a class level in anything and, finally, a young gold dragon who took a couple of class levels (Rogue) but no more Race levels. He was very much the "tricksy" prankster one associates with Copper Dragons.
